Yay! A submission! Thanks for scanning this for me, ~Portrait of Mika Nakashima, art class assignment. Drawn with 2B and 6B pencils. Y'know, the non-mechanical regular kind. Also used blending stumps and a kneadable eraser. Reference used. If you wanna see it, go here:

I wish I could've compared it to the ref on the computer before I finished this. Rawrrg. Then it would have looked nicer. Heh.
Please tell me how I can improve.
Suggestions are appreciated.Got this back along with [link] from the Alameda County Fair. Judge's Favorite for both.

Me, too! I keep checking out books out at the library that I thought would be helpful, but I can't draw anything like what's in them yet! And the last art class I took was at least 2 years ago! The last person I drew turned out pretty good, but it looks like a guy and it was supposed to be a girl...

some people in the previous comments had mentioned that the scanner reduced the tones in this pic..so i darkened it a bit on PS for you x_X;; ..if you want...if not, then just ignore the link. [link]

The lightness is mostly due to the scanner, but yeah, some parts should be darker.

Portraits are usually very difficult to master- I know from experience- but I think that this has come out very well! Everything is in proportion, which is very important, your shading does suit the subject matter very, very well, and, most importantly, there is life behind those eyes! The detail in the hair is particularly impressive. Usually, I'd recommend using slightly more contrasting shades, but in this case, I'd leave it as it is. Very good work.

Well, there's definately nothing you can do to improve this really. It's amazing. I love the delicacy of your style because I think it suits the subject matter so well. Really beautiful work.

This is very very nice. It's got a soft and whimsical feel to it. When comparing it to the source, your shapes appear to be dead on. Good job. If there would be anything I could suggest, I would darken darks just a bit more--the pupils, eyelashes, nostrils, corners of the mouth. Don't be afraid to add your full value spectrum...it'll add more depth to the piece. You asked for advice on the hair, but I think you've managed it quite well. Once again, well done!
