Description Some sketches I did last week of Torn from Darkest Hour. I was just milling about work when I decided to do some sketches.

Keira is also in there, in her wastelander clothes. nothing too special

These are some designs for Torn's winter wear for Darkest hour. The coat is final, but the thermal vest the lower one is not. I am not happy with the lower torso...

I do not own Jak and Daxter

Honestly, I think Torn needs to wear coats that fall no further than his waist. Long coats do him no favors for style. Sig and Damas and even Jak to an extent can get away with having loose stuff flapping around their thighs, but it just doesn't work for Torn. He could wear a wide heavy belt to support his weapon holsters, ammo pouches, and whatever, and to keep the wind from getting in and icing over his bellybutton.

You could use the gun and knife holsters to give the impressions that Torn's wearing about four layers from the waist down--cinch in the straps around his thighs snugly enough to make the yakow-hide bunch up a little. Not sure how that would look, just a thought.

As for extremities--mittens are a must. Fingers stay warmer when they share the same "pocket". Which would make handling a standard gun problematic. Some sort of hood to protect the ears would be good--but I think some sort of compromise between warmth and hearing would have to be struck. There's also the wind to contend with-ears flapping in the breeze is one thing in temperate Haven City, quite another in the Frozen North. I think there needs to be some sort of cap, akin to the earmuff-hats we stub-eared types wear when it gets too cold to worry about how one's chapeau makes one look to other shivering souls waddling across the ice. A cap that's lined in shearling or something similar, coming down to the eyebrows in the front and possibly offering a flap to wrap over the nose and mouth, too...extending down to cover at least part of the back of the neck--then with some built-in support and warming plates tucked into more shearling-lined ear cradles. Practicality would dictate sheathing the ears completely, and to heck with being able to hear each other--but for looks, I'd rather go with supporting the ears from behind and leaving them open to the weather in the front. How else is Torn going to show off his Genuine Bada$$ Tattoos, anyway? (Though revealing his extensive tattooing to the Dark Warriors could be an interesting plot point--I've always thought the marks on the ears were indicative of rank somehow, sort of like bar codes. And in my world, Torn is tattooed from forehead to toes, and it wasn't exactly a voluntary marking.)

You could solve the problem by making the headwear part of a long and heavy cape/robe, as in Torn wears his buckskin leather and form-fitting pants under a calf-length cape, which has a fitted and lined hood and can be fastened over outerwear against particularly nasty wind, snow, cold, whatever. Then have Torn wear it open most of the time. This works beautifully for the military officers in FullMetal Alchemist--their uniforms are short-jacketed, and they wear a long cape-like coat with a hood when it rains or gets particularly cold.

Oh yeah, and the mittens! I wanted to go with the thumb and index finger separate from a pocket holding the rest.

Kinda inspired from ATLA.

Good point about the flapping ears. Wind is a pretty big factor. And I like the idea of a kind of muff that comes off the ears and maybe covers the nose and mouth....it's just a matter of how to apply it to be functional. (Cuz of course, Torn's gotta fit these thing over his feaking HUGE ears)

Supporting them from behind allows for an opening to be made in the front so that you can hear better. Kinda like how the corthinian greek helmets by the ancient greets had a high cut hole for the ears to hear orders on a battle field.

I'm a bit partial to the long winter coat. And the thickness of the coat is also because it's fur lined...giving it some puff. The best winter coats are the thick down fulled ones because they pocket body heat and keep it more contained in the coat. Kinda like how in The Day After Tomorrow they stuffed newspapers in their coats to keep warm. The longer the coat too keeps the draft down as well. I would thick Torn...from the temperate Haven City would have a big problem with the -20 degree wind chill and cold.

Plus this is looking to be a design that not just Torn is going to wear. All of the other soldiers at the Prison will have similar clothing and when Torn is ready to leave, all the Dark Warriors are going to need winter gear too.

Lol, it was so much easier to make wastelander clothing. At least we had references!!!

Oh and I got some cute sketches of Torn standing around in a 'army' hoodie. HAHAHA he needed some kind of dress down clothing too for some parts of the story.

The idea of a hoodie as "off-duty" wear for Torn sounds good to me. The hood might even be used against Torn by a Dark Warrior testing his boundaries by trying to beat up the commander--grab it and use it to choke Torn and pull him off his feet. Or maybe the assailant just wants one of Torn's weapons for some reason. I imagine Torn's trained against that sort of attack, and could probably make the attacker wish he'd never been born in short order.

On the coat--well, if he has to wear a long coat, he's got to lose the Santa Claus trim along the bottom edge, and break up the wide open panel of the coat below Torn's waist. Torn needs accessories! Or maybe just some big patch pockets.

As for mittens--an index finger wouldn't be a bad idea. There's also the concept of convertible mittens--with an inner layer that's built like a glove for times when dexterity is needed, and an outer layer that pulls a mitten-pocket up over the fingers and down to the palm for warmth. I have a set of gloves like that--only the glove part leaves about half of the fingers bare, with the mitten part held against the back of the hand by a patch of Velcro. Good for working in over air-conditioned offices.

On the matter of ears and keeping them warm--I suspect that those ears are supported by significantly thicker and stronger cartilage than that found in a stub-eared human's unimpressive audio receivers. Still, they appear to be at least somewhat flexible--probably flexible enough to be bent momentarily to be stuffed into earmuffs without causing any damage. (Though twisting and folding them until they were black and blue was probably one of Erol's favorite warmup torture methods.) There's almost certainly at least one good-sized vein in each ear--meaning they'd be highly vulnerable to heat loss, and decent alternate sites for IV needles and medical injections.

Where was I? Oh yes, earmuffs! Torn et al might use either electrical or chemical warming pads inside the earmuffs, just to help avoid frostbite, especially out near the tips of the ears. The cartilage can probably support a few ounces of electrical wiring or chemical pouches. I figure the muffs are sewn as separate lined pieces onto the main body of the cap, with a small hole up against the head to allow for clearer hearing. In fact, the earmuffs might even be convertible, with something like a Velcro seam allowing the wearer to either cover the ears front and back, or leave the front open and just use the back part to warm and support the ears. The flap that fastens over the nose and mouth springs from the piece of fabric or leather that wraps around the back of the neck.

I've probably spent way too much time thinking about it, but those ears have touched off all kinds of speculation in the part of my brain that simmers while I wash my hair or drive to and from work. Ever notice how Jak's "shark tips" don't seem to be too common? Or that the ratio of width to length in ears seems to follow a certain pattern according to a person's sex? Ashelin's ears are shorter and broader than Torn's, and Tess's appear to follow a similar pattern. There's probably some interesting plot fodder in all that somewhere.

Yeah I noticed the length of ears. I guess I should have tone down the length of Jayme's ears, but I also wanted her's to have the little funky point. I made it a point that Mar had something similar while working on Aetas.

And don't worry about thinking about this too much. You should see the notes I have on the uniforms all the Dark Warriors wear. They have three different basic shirt designs, one 'flack' vest that is as good as any bullet proof vest but also has to be insanely flexible to move in and also the armor they wear. I've had to redesign it twice.

Besides, its interesting to hear what other people think about a design. Grue's entire head set was designed by myself and a number of my friends who talked about ways to help the poor guy see but not give him his sight back completely without a cost.

Yeah. I was thinking of lining the bottom of Torn's coat with a leather band. To match the belt.

I kinda want to put more armor on the arms or maybe the elbows.

OH OH HOODIE OVER THE HEAD! That would be AWESOME! hahahahaah. I could see Jarn just leaping out of his cell and bagging Torn's head with his own hoodie and making a break for it.

I call the part of my brain that considers ears and the like my Rationalization Engines--and they're almost always running. Anything that even smells faintly like a gap in the canon will get sent through the Engines and be patched, usually by a very wordy and convoluted series of entirely unsupported ideas that entertain me. Jak had a sudden growth spurt between Jak 3 and Jak X. In an RP I play, there's an explanation for that. There is also an entire backstory for Sig, a name and history of Jak's mother, and some rambling on the genetic engineering that created the Heirs of Mar. Oh, and my interpretation of who the original Mar really was.

Armoring Torn could work, so long as the armor didn't bulk him up too much. Maybe the lower part of his coat is made sort of like a suit of leather mail--individual small "plates" sewn together for strength, then lined with thick fur for warmth. It'd be heavy, but I'm assuming this gear is made for riding on an animal (the Tontons of Star Wars come to mind, perhaps Jak's world has cold-adapted leaper lizards) or in a vehicle of some kind, rather than walking.

As for Grue--I heartily agree with the inclination not to give him complete vision. What's the point of blinding him if you're just going to negate the blindness with some deus-ex? To reiterate something I think I said in some earlier post, I think that when he's in territory he knows, Grue can probably manage reasonably well, so long as no pranksters push the furniture around or rearrange the kitchen cabinets so the cereal's where the roach powder used to be. He might even be able to use cues given to him by that sophisticated computer he works with to perceive the world around him--in areas the computer has sensors and there are sufficient comm relays to pass on that volume of data. But Grue's sight is gone, and if it were my story, I'd make sure to make that a significant part of his character and how other characters interact with him. Grue probably remembers something of what it was like to see, and once he's no longer suffering captivity, he might even get frustrated and blow his stack at the limitations imposed on him.

I'm going on vacation as of Wednesday, but I'll be looking forward to seeing whatever new stuff pops up when I get home and boot up the computer!

Torn's a skinny little dude, probably weighs 130 dripping wet and fully armed. I think the lower half of his outfit needs to hug his body like the upper half does, to carry the "whiplash lean" look all the way down. I also think that everyone running around in cold weather with a set of ears like Torn's needs something to keep head and those three-foot brain radiators warm. Frostbitten ears would almost certainly not improve Torn's attitude.

I like the tousled-fur ruff around the collar of Torn's jacket, but putting it at the lower hem...reminds me of Santa Claus more than anything else. Maybe he could wear something along the lines of motorcycle chaps, or the buckskin leather pants favored by the heroes in old Western movies.

Yeah. I'm having a hard time coming up with a presentable look for hoods and the like without making it look terrible or stupid. LOL.

I guess really it's the coat making him look bigger. The prison's location is insanely cold. I still need to design snow pants (I like the buckskin leather pants...it would look good with the coat...which is 'yakcow hide and fur lined'.....oh and the insanely large ass belt around the waist to keep it snug.

I'm not fond of the lower part of the coat either. I'm think of lining it in the same leather that the belt he wears.

"three-foot brain radiators warm" LOL. His ears are SO DAMN LONG. Lol.

Hey, do you think a hood that comes up and wraps around the ears would look alright?
