Description
In the City of Richmond, Virginia on the site where this church stands, was the Old Richmond Theatre. In 1811, the theatre caught fire due to a lamp catching scenery on fire and as a result of improper safety precautions and stampeding patrons, 75 people lost their lives in the blaze, including the Governor of Virginia at that time. Monumental Church was commissioned by Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshal and built in 1814.
