Description Well, I can't find a home for him, so we're taking him in. He still has a pretty bad gash on his back from a fight a couple days ago and it's still puffy and sore for him but he's getting better. Our cat we originally had before him is starting to get used to him already, so that's a plus. We're gonna try to get him fixed and see what happens... Finally found a low cost mobile neuter clinic that specializes in the care of domesticated animals here in Connecticut, so that's also another plus.

We're also trying to think of names for him... I know cats don't really answer to their name, but hey, he deserves one. I will mention that he's pretty fearless so maybe that will help with thinking up a name. If you have any suggestions be sure to comment. I'm kind of out of ideas... my husband was thinking of 'Rocky' but I just don't know. Suggestions please! Thanks.

Click here for his mugshot portrait so you can see a better view of him.

He's really a cute one. I usually call my cat Katze - the German word for cat, even though she has a proper name, too. She knows which way the wind is blowing, when I call her so. .

hehe... It's just a shame he won't stay this small forever. I think we've settled on Dorito. It works because he's really quirky.

and a BIG thanks for the !

HE IS SOO GORGEOUS!!!! I wish my kittens would sit still so i could get good shots of them, but if they are sleeping they jump awake when i come near them hoping to play!

he looks alot like one of my kittens (simillar colour and all) whose name is puddles.. which is not a tough fearless name at all... id be very typical and call him tiger xD

anyway im rambling! enjoy his company!!! He is beautiful!

phykia In reply to TaSh-C [2008-07-20 19:38:09 +0000 UTC]

hehe... Thank you. He's the only one of all the cats I've ever had that sits still when I take pics. And all I have to do is wave my hand in whatever direction and he'll turn is face to see where my hand goes. Very well mannered cat... except when he has bursts of energy and bouncing off the walls. Though lately he's been rather quiet and sleepy because he has a really bad gash from a fight so he's sitting still and resting up for the most part.

Ummm... the gash opened up today. That would be the handy work of a jealous alpha female. Puss galore. I don't know what to do except put him in the spare room so he can heal because I don't want that puss all over the house.

Yay your keeping him. That means I get too see more pictures of him. Names... hmm..

Well not only is he brave, he has huge eyes, so beautiful. Like a doe. Suggestions:

His orange color makes something like Blaze nice. And he kind of looks like Boots in Shrek in his "mugshot." Chester seems to fit him a bit. Cinnamon. Copper. Dandelion (I know it seems like a girl's name but if you've read Watership Downs you might understand the meaning since he has a story to tell and he is a fighter). My friend used to have a cat the same color named Dorito. Fox. October. Torque. Victor. He looks like a Victor.

List:
Blaze
Boots
Chester
Cinnamon
Copper
Dandelion
Dorito.
Fox
October
Torque
Victor

I kind of like the Dorito name, it's pretty cute just like him. It's just I doubt he'll be cute when he gets old and fat. I think my husband even likes it too which is a first for him. I personally like it... he is gold after all. Dorito will definitely get some consideration.

phykia In reply to SaldaeanFarmgirl [2008-07-21 03:28:21 +0000 UTC]

Dorito it is. I think my husband and I like it a lot. Thank you.

However, I sorta have bad news. Remember the fight he was in? Well, I don't think he's healing all too well. I tried to put ice on him just to see if the swelling would go down... then he started growling... like cute baby growls. lol ... Well, my female cat thought that he was growling at me and she jumped up and tried to fight him. All of a sudden that gash on his side started leaking puss and I tried using a towel to get as much as I could out, but he really didn't like it. I suppose the pain from it was unbearable. Anyway, I have them separated, him in the spare room because I can only imagine if he was in the rest of the house getting puss and blood everywhere. I wish I could afford to go to a vet. I can't think of much else I can do except go to a pet store and see if they over the counter antibiotics. Sucks.

The best thing you could do for the cut is to put some type of antiseptic on it and then wrap it I think. And change the bandages often. I will look up on the internet some other treatments though. And if it starts like, growing, start squeezing the puss out (I know its a bit disgusting but this is what we do to the horses). I'm sure he will get along fine either way, my favorite cat out at the farm. Jagz, is constantly getting into fights with the other cats (he's kinda the leader) and I see him with major gashes, but he lives on. And he's so loveable.

From Sniksnak.com/cathealth:

Treatment of cat bite wounds varies. If you know that your cat has bite wounds from a fight, antibiotics given within 24 hours will usually stop spread of the infection and development of an abscess. If several days have elapsed since the fight, an abscess will usually form. The abscess must be drained through the bite wound holes or by incising the skin over the abscess. Occasionally, a latex drain tube must be placed to keep the wound open and allow pus to drain out completely. Antibiotics given by injection and/or by mouth complete the treatment. The abscess usually heals within 2-5 days.

Ice Pack Tips:

Use an ice pack wrapped in a light cloth or cover the pack with plastic and place it on the wound. Gel-filled flexible ice packs can be purchased at any pharmacy, stored in the freezer and kept ready for use. Chemical ice packs need not be refrigerated and are activated by manipulation. If no ice pack is available, a plastic bag (i.e., freezer bag or any strong, durable food storage bag) filled with ice cubes is an easy alternative to cover or wrap around the injury. Another option is to use a bag of frozen vegetables (frozen corn or peas work best but any kind will do), which conforms nicely to almost any superficial injury.

If an open wound is bleeding, place a sterile gauze or clean cloth over the area and apply direct pressure to the surface. Use an ice pack applied with pressure directly to the wound. The combination of pressure and ice causes vessels to constrict and minimize blood loss. If you don't have an ice pack, direct pressure alone will be of great benefit.

Hope that helped and hope its not too long to read.

Yeah, a lot of this is common sense. lol... there's not much I can do because every time I try to clean it or apply some kind of gauze or even pressure, he squeals and tries to bite me so I've stopped doing that. Even when I hold him by the scruff of his neck... I just can't keep him still for too long. I figured his own saliva and him cleaning it would be better than me trying to do anything to it since it seems it's just way to painful right now. I am checking in on it just about every hour and it seems the bleeding has stopped so that's a good sign. He's playful and alert which is also a good sign.

Yep. He should be fine. Poor Dorito doesn't know that your trying to help. Like me keeping my horse in the stall, she's mad at me for this because she doesn't know it'll make her better faster.

phykia In reply to SaldaeanFarmgirl [2008-07-22 02:04:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, I was successfully able to put an ace bandage around him... he doesn't like it but he's used to it now you should see it... soooo cute. He's sleeping a lot... just got up about 30 mins ago to run around and eat... so yeah, he'll be fine. Just wish I could afford antibiotics. I'm working with hydrogen peroxide at the moment, so far it seems to be doing the job.

I need to get a pic of him in his bandage. lol

SaldaeanFarmgirl In reply to phykia [2008-07-22 02:19:00 +0000 UTC]

You do need a pic, if he's as cute as you say. I think your home medicine and love will work as well as antibiotics and a trip to the vet (they probably use something along the same lines as hydrogen peroxide too). I can imagine how cute he looks (hehe)with his bandage
