Ed Asner (1929-2021) was an actor as well as president of the Screen Actors Guild, and the most honored male performer in the Primetime Emmy Awards. He was Lou Grant in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off Lou Grant, making him one of the few actors on TV to play the same character in comedy and drama. For voice acting, he was Carl Fredericksen in Up and Kid Potato in WordGirl.

Carl Fredericksen wasn't able to have children of his own, but Kid Potato is father to one of the recurring villains in WordGirl, The Butcher. In an earlier episode, The Butcher claims that "Mr. Butcher" is his father; when Kid Potato is introduced in the episode "Meat My Dad", he's clearly no butcher. Either the writers forgot, or they subtly implied that The Butcher has two dads. It is possible, since The Butcher never mentioned having a mom.

Coincidentally, Asner was born the same year as his Up co-star, Christopher Plummer, and died the same year.
