Description ναύαρχος - Navarchus was the commander of the fleet in Ancient Greece. Nearchus (vέαρχος) is a participant in the Panhellenic campaign, an associate of Alexander. The period of his life is known approximately 348-240 BC. In ancient sources, he is called a “true Cretan”, from which it is concluded that he hails from Crete. This idea is promoted by Arrian in his book “Indica". At different times, the phrase “true Cretan” denoted different characteristics of a person. During the Byzantine period, a “true Cretan” was called a simple-minded person who is easily deceived, a villager, but who, when he finds out about the offense, hits him very painfully. At the beginning of the Middle Ages, a “true Cretan”, a cunning merchant. they called a sea robber, a pirate. In the Renaissance, a “true Cretan” was called a sea robber, a pirate. We do not know which of these definitions characterized Nearchus. The Nearchus name translates as the new commander, apparently an accepted nickname. Now Nearchus is considered to be really from the island of Crete. At the same time, he is a resident of the Macedonian policy of Amphiopolis.
