back story:

Johnny is a ghost from the 1960s who died at the age 19 after playing chicken with his ex best friend (Note for those who don't know: Chicken is when they get into two separate vehicles and charge at each other from opposite ends usually until one of them chicken's out and swerves out of the way). Johnny's best friend Ray had stolen his girlfriend Mary therefore doing something reckless like playing chicken "for her love" (Mary had no intentions of getting back with Johnny). Neither Ray or Johnny had chickened out in the battle causing them to crash. Ray was lucky (unlike Johnny) and lived on to marry Mary and have children and grandchildren.

(In the present) One of Ray and Mary's children, Andy is in the middle of a divorce. To save their 18 year old son Judas from extra stress, they decided to send him to his grandparents. Ray and Mary. Judas had to change schools just for senior year and set off to graduate in a small school in a small boring town. However What nobody knew is that Johnny was so angry that he had become earthbound feeding into his rage when he'd visit his "old friend". upon arrival Judas met this tall greaser dude who was chilling in his room. After the long interdictions and stories they had both understood that only Judas could see him for some reason. Despite Judas trying to "help" Johnny pass on, It was clear Johnny did not want to move on so instead he settled to torment Judas all year long...
