It's not really a solid gem. It's supposed to be swirling with the colours red, black and blue, like coloured water flowing around each other, or the heart of a flame, filled with dark shades. The runes along the arms also share this feature, as though the colours stretch into them, down to the points.
Neat huh?

A little too much specularity on the blade, it's made of light, so really, there'd be almost no specularity. Check out my lightsabres if you'd like

Ya - I'm not sure how do create a realistic light blade yet - I suspect there is a good way to do it without using geometry at all - volume light perhaps - but I haven't got that figured out yet! Anyway - thanks for the tips and critique Kyt - I really appreciate the feedback!

I've tried making a light only lightsabre, but the program I use can't make a long line of light that is isometric, only conal in shape. The best way I can think of, it to use a linear light inside an invisible tube that has boosted specularity and making the lightsource the colour you want. other than that, I just stick with creating a translucent coloured rod and sticking a white light inside it and giving the rod a 100% colour filter.

Your brother is trying to enjoy his very last day of summer vacation!! Which is hard because my mind keeps thinking about the fact that tomorrow I'm getting up and going to University! But I'm not taking very difficult classes this semester because the baby is going to be here in about a month. So it shouldn't be too rough!
