It was a hidden fact of why Toby despised Dawson, but loved Olivia. Dawson had the sewn cuff from using cat gut and Toby instantly detected the 'peculiar pungency' on him. Since he hates cats, he immediately growled at Dawson. Olivia, meanwhile, had crumpets in her pocket, adding a wonderful cheese-bake type smell to her, and she was kind enough to offer him one. Give an animal food and he's your slave for life.
