The game's pretty casual and arcadey like several NES games. Though they didn't translate the game, none of the written text is needed to play it normally. It's still confusing when you first play it since the items and bonuses aren't really explained (or I was just awful at noticing the patterns haha). Most items will aid you, while bombs wind up killing you (I avoided items for the longest time because of this). Getting three items from breaking bricks will summon the giant invincible frog buddy. Gathering three of the petals the princess drops will take you to the bonus stage to battle the boss jerk. Hope this helps if you haven't already figured it out!
