I've always looked around, searching for nondestructive ways to retouch skin. Thank you so much for this! <3

This is a little difficult for me.
So I follow every step, but when I take the black and white off to check, the dodging is way to light almost white, and it looks terrible! What am I doing wrong?

Do you have the dodging layer set to Soft Light?

Great tutorial and I found it easy to understand. I think that's the thing with D&B, easy to understand but hard to do and practice required - it seems like more of a skill than a technique. I found the close up shot particularly useful here. Thanks.

Very welcome! I'm glad it was easily understandable.

Yes it's a very tedious process and requires a trained eye. But the more you practice, the easier it becomes!

This is essentially what the High Pass filter is for. You can get comparable results very quickly with an inverted and blurred high pass layer in overlay mode and mask out the bits you don't want affected. I hope that helps

I have used that technique before but without the black/white layer...(I will use this from now on^^)
you explained it very well!! and i think this technique is much easier than the one where you have to create two extra layers, on for dodge, the other for burn...
still it takes you very long to get a good result xD

PorterRetouching In reply to Nilanja [2012-08-30 21:44:46 +0000 UTC]

I agree! I have tried the curves layers as well and I just don't think they look as natural. (They look really saturated in my opinion.)

I love the black and white layer simply because it's less strain on your eyes. I have to keep checking how it looks with the black and white adjustment turned off though. Just to make sure I'm not 'Over Doing' it.

I'm really glad this was understandable! I had to re-read it about 20 times and dumb it down, (actually, I had to be more specific)

So thank you for the feedback!
