Description This was made with a technique where you rub burnt sienna oil paint onto a spray-fixed pencil drawing. You then use a kneaded eraser to remove the highlight areas and then apply colored pencil to that. I did this from a black-and-white internet reference, so I basically made up all of the color information myself. I'm proud of the way it turned out, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

I love this actor, it's a shame that he's deceased, though.

Dr. Vinnie Boom-botz was right. He is ugly.
When Rodney went trick-or-treating, some kids tried to pull his face off.
When he was a baby, he was breastfed by his father. His mother said "I think we should just stay friend".

This is a great picture. It reminds of all of the jokes he told.

Rodney's life story may have been, "No Respect," but this picture deserves plenty of respect. Excellent work.

Looks incredible, especially considering what you used as reference. Figuring out color yourself is quite hard to do; but you seem to have it down naturally.

Handsome devil, that Rodney. And one of the funniest men to ever have graced this world. Rest in peace, brudda. May you finally find that respect you've surely earned.

You've got his likeness down pat, but his eyes make him seem somewhat creepy though.

"No respect. No respect at all."

Rest in peace.

Nice image - interesting technique. Do you use a tool to rub the burnt sienna on or just do it with your fingers? And do you lift it off straight away while the paints still wet? Be nice if you do another one to see some sort of WIP, while the sienna's going on.

You just rub it on with a paper towel, though I suppose you could use your finger if you don't mind a mess. You have to remove the paint while it's wet, cuz when it dries it's there for good. Kneaded erasers pick it up pretty well, but you won't be able to use em for anything else after doing this.

I just love it....You mentioned the this piece on the john williams one, so I definately had to check this one out.....the technique itself is quite unique (so much I've never heard of it before!), but it accomplished an awesome work in terms of shading, volume and whatnot; awesome job on portraying mr. dangerfield

omg, this is AWESOME!!!! i absolutely LOVE how smooth the colors look ! all the colors and shading and highlights blend in perfectly ! and yes, it definitely looks like rodney ! it also looks so ALIVE ! and the fact that you used a b/w pic as a reference shows your mastery for living colors . keep up the awesome work

I love the color additions- the green and the purple. It's hard to use colors in shadows. The only thing that bugs me about this piece is the outline along the hairline. It takes away some of the realism. But otherwise, great job!

I can't wait to try this technique - you do lovely work!

Is this done on paper or perhaps gesso board? I would think that paper soaks the oil up too much to lift it later on...

Wow .. I really like the technique you used for this! ..I've some questions about it now! Like, do you wait for the oil paint to dry before taking the eraser to it? ..and do you mix the paint with another medium like linseed oil or just straight oil paint in a thin wash? I've not seen anyone else try this around school, not sure if my illustration instructor will teach it so if I could get one more tool under my belt that the other students will not have .. >_>

PreyingDantis In reply to mnemosa [2004-11-27 08:37:02 +0000 UTC]

The only difficult part is erasing fine details with the eraser. It doesn't keep its shape and you have to keep kneading it otherwise you'll just put oil paint back into the highlights... Otherwise, it's UBER-FUN (probably because I love colored pencil)!

yeah, 4th yr art at my school does a charcoal lifting like that, like a drawing in reverse.. a lot of smudges and stuff happens.

PreyingDantis In reply to mnemosa [2004-11-27 21:32:55 +0000 UTC]

Eww.... I despise charcoal lifting. This process is MUCH easier. As long as you do it in one sitting, though, because if the oil paint dries before you finish: YOU IS SCREWED.

Good description of your technique, and a great illustration. I particularly like the hilights and the expression on his face -- he's alive, and that struck me when looking at the thumb size (always a good thing it it can live up in small size).

Great work, although I'm not that proficient in that particular style to give your any comments that could help you more than giving you some kudos I'm always impressed of what can be achieved with pencils. Keep up!

wow. if this is the first deviation, i can't wait to see what comes next. i had never heard of this technique, and am now quite interested in it. this is quite lifelike, you got his persona and his EYES wonderfully, which is a bit diffucult, as so many people know who he is. i really enjoy the shading on his face and the right side of his hair. i think maybe the left side of the matting could be a bit cleaner though, and the visible lines in the black on the left bottem side are a bit distracting. but i really like this.
