Description Mine and TwigKing 's take on how Thranduil lost the love of his life, and how Legolas lost his beloved mother.
Warning: FEELS.

HEADCANON TIME.

Long ago in Mirkwood there was a time of happiness, when the first child of King Thranduil and Queen Tharia was born, prince Legolas. But sadly a darkness had gathered short after that time, which would leave the peace and happiness of the King and Queen short lived. Orcs from the north were now threatening to take the great land of Mirkwood for their own, leaving the once bountiful forest in decay. Tharia and Thranduil wanted to do everything they could to protect their new born baby so they had no choice but to go to war. They soon marched a great army to Gundabad ready to fight to protect the lands and the others surrounding it. The gates of the dark palace opened and the elf army entered, they pushed on in the empty land seeing no sign of enemies. Once Thranduil was going to order the army to return, they were attacked.  Surprised, the army started fighting. Tharia and Thranduil fought side by side blowing down all orcs that challenged them, until a massive troll came out of the crowd and attacked them, separating them. Thranduil was still in the middle of the army but he didn’t worry since he knew his wife was stronger than she looks. But Tharia, knowing that she wouldn’t be able to fight the troll and fearing that it would kill her husband ran away with the troll chasing her. She lead the large troll to a large cliff above the army attempting to fight it. She brought out her duel swords made from the finest steel to fight it since she had much skill with them. The fighting was long a brutal for her and it seemed it didn't do much damage, the troll threw her close over the edge but as she lay near it she knew what she had to do to make sure the troll doesn't over throw them all. As the troll came closer to push her off she rolled under him and jumped on his back and moving her weight towards the cliff making them fall and killing them both. When the battle was over Thranduil saw that his wife wasn’t around, he ordered the army to search around thinking to himself that she is only injured. One of the soldiers found her body at the bottom of the cliff she fell from, mangled full of scratches. The soldier slowly got to Thranduil and couldn’t tell him the news, he could only lead the now worried king to his dead companion. Thranduil couldn’t believe it, his once beautiful wife was now a lifeless corpse. He couldn’t keep the tears away, he held her and sobbed knowing that his new born son and him are now alone. He burned her body in Gundabad only taking her crown and duel swords, when the soldiers asked why he burned her there he didn’t reply he only looked in front of him as if he too was dead. When they came back to mirkwood the army could sense a difference in the forest, for it turned dark as if it was sick. Thranduil became cold hearted and thought only of himself and his people, not even taking care of his son, who was in the hands of a nanny. Since Thranduil closed his people from the outside world they too became arrogant and stubborn. And the forest became worse as time went on until it looked how it does now the once beautiful and green forest became a dark dead structure consuming and hiding the magnificent kingdom with the broken king and lonely prince.
