Nah. In Karen Starr's case, she technically cannot burn or sun-tan because of her invulnerable skin, however, as she gains power from a yellow sun, I'd like to suggest that the darker skin color is a natural condition of Kryptonians when they are at full power charge.
I say she uses the coloring to remind her that when she gets low on charge, her skin whitens up as a warning.

Well, technically, she started out as Supergirl aka Karen Starr on Earth-2, got boom-tubed to Earth-Prime in the New 52 along with female Robin, aka Helena Wayne, daughter of Batman Bruce Wayne and Catwoman Selina Kyle. Both Batman and Catwoman were killed when Darkseid began his attack. Karen was raised on Earth 2 by Superman and Lois Lane after her capsule came to Earth-2 from Krypton-2 when it exploded.
Both took up new identities for over five years on Earth-Prime as Power Girl and Huntress. PeeGee, with her Kryptonian knowledge became a CEO of a hi-tech firm with the intentions of returning to Earth-2. Huntress took on a false identity as Helena Bertinelli to combat the Mafia, and later burned her identity when PeeGee rescued her and once again became Helena Wayne. Helena, knowing Bruce Wayne codes and passwords from Earth-2 was able to hack Batman's accounts on Earth-Prime to finance both her and Karen's new careers. Karen was aware of Supergirl on Earth, and took great pains to avoid making contact with her. Huntress ran into Earth-Prime's teen-age male Robin and fought with him until he finally conceded to treat her as a "sister"and didn't report Helena to Bruce Wayne.
Eventually, PeeGee and Huntress were able to return to Earth-2 to battle the forces of Darkseid, who eventually destroyed that world's Superman, Wonder Woman and many other heroes, including Lois Lane, Superman's widow, whose spirit survived and had taken another identity. Superman was enslaved by Darkseid and was being drained of the last of his powers, and Lois removed Superman's "S" and presented it to Karen Starr, and she once again became Supergirl, albeit in a Powergirl costume. Powergirl also turn over her title as PG to her Afro lab assistant who had helped her return to Earth 2 and had gained superhuman powers as a result.
Super/Power Girl and a number of the Earth-2 heroes were able to escape in a starship after the destruction of Earth-2 by Darkseid began, their fate at this time is still unknown, but DC has paired Super/Power Girl in a series of comic adventures with Harley Quinn after PeeGee fell to Earth-prime and was knocked unconscious and rescued by Harley. Harley has convinced Karen she is someone else, though Karen is starting to realize who she really is.
So, in a very convoluted way, Karen Starr, the ex-Powergirl is entitled to wear what you term as the "shield of Shame". In a manner of speaking she seems to be a "spare Supergirl" on Earth-Prime, even though she is older, and was Supergirl previously and now is again after her foster mother Lois Lane gave her a piece of the deceased Earth-2 Superman's costume before he died, and declared she was the rightful heir of the House of Zor-L.
Confused yet? DC did a very poor job of trying to kill off Power Girl because they considered a full-bodied woman like Karen Starr is not "politically correct" for DC newer readers. Meanwhile they still haven't found a way to reconcile the fact that she is one of DC's most popular heroines.

I liked it better when Power Girl wanted to be her own hero separate from the identity of Superman or anyone else. I admired to fact that she removed the shield and more or less told Supes where he could stick it.

That pretty much happened quite a number of years ago on Earth Prime, WAY prior to the New 52 retconned version of PeeGee. She always had an affinity for the Earth-2 Superman and Lois Lane as she was raised as their foster daughter from when her Pod arrived on Earth-2 before Darkseid's destruction of Earth-2 and most of the heroes.
I don't think at this point she has had any encounters in the New 52 with Superman, but they did put PeeGee and Supes together in "Convergence: Action Comics" and Huntress and Batman in "Comvergence: Worlds Finest"and some other titles as well I don't have them all read yet, but it's my understanding that Lex Luthor has trapped a number of heroes in domed cities, such as Metropolis and Gotham, and the heroes have to find a way to break out of the cities. Apparently they are unaware of the dome itself. And, this was supposed to be a limited Series until DC made it's move from New York to the Disney studio in LA.
It's a helluva mess, and getting harder to follow. Methinks this came about because DC realized their F*ck-Up when they tried to push Powergirl out because she was apparently not "politically correct" to the femmnazis because she had a curvy body. To which my reaction was , "Yeah,so what now?"

You speak the truth my friend. I agree with everything but the Disney part. DC will never be able to really kill powergirl, so now they are rebranding her supergirl. But Karen Starr is supergirl. DC should understand that they can't baby proof DC characters. Honestly, is it fair to suggest that people don't have all kinds of body types? A full figured women will never get a lead role again. Wonder Woman was played by a thin model in Batman vs Superman, when we all know there are actresses that would have been better. Lucy Lawless type actresses. DC will learn soon enough as sales drop more and more. Marvel and manga/anime will continue beating them. They should know that bad attention is better than no attention. Batman vs Superman only beat Deadpool in box office opening weekend because it was pg-13 so more youth could see it. But in the end the total sales will tell use who wins. we'll see which makes more at the box office which Marvel has already won in my opinion. Make a separate series for children completely safe that mothers are okay with, but keep the DC your fans love. I don't believe DC was bought by Disney or will be anytime soon Time Warner owns DC.
