Description
In 1992, Tristar Pictures acquired the rights to produce an American Godzilla film. However, before Roland Emmerich came along, Jan De Bont was initially given the reins to a Godzilla film that would have seen our favorite radioactive reptile, this time the product of an ancient civilization (Gamera, much?) clash against an alien gestalt monster called the Gryphon (despite not resembling an eagle/lion hybrid in the conventional sense). However, with an estimated budget of $100 million, the studio balked and sent this version into development hell, until ultimately approaching Emmerich and Dean Devlin, who tossed that script in favor of their own, which we're all familiar with today, and ironically ended up costing MORE than the de Bont script.
This illustration is based heavily on concept maquettes produced by Stan Winston, which ultimately went unused for the film.
