Description It occured to me that I hadn't done a steampunk rendition of the REAL Cybermen from Mondas, so I got to work on this one.

This time, I chose the Mondasian design from the Patrick Troughton serial "The Invasion." In keeping with the theme of the episode, these Cybermen are powered by electricity transmitted to them all by a central tower; they aren't powered by steam like the other version I drew up.

Enjoy!! Also, stay tuned for a steampunked version of the Cybermen seen in the serial "The Tenth Planet" (~rapstertee , I know you in particular will like that one!! ).

I really like this image a lot. The detail work turned out very nice; all the garters and tubes and buttons, dials and electrical conductors really make this pop. The pose is very action packed as well. Nice job.

That's gotta be the best comment I've ever gotten on this piece, and I uploaded it years ago! Thank you very much.

I'm glad you like it! I'm especially proud of this one...it was kind of my "breaking point" of going beyond simple full-body pictures and doing something more dynamic.

Very nicely done! I like the pose as well. I think I spy a Feratan (sp?) blade there?

Thanks! I'm very proud of this one, too - I think I draw better when I'm not trying to do a full-body shot.

Haha, yes...that IS a Ferratan blade. I just think it looks cool and adds dynamism to my pictures (the way it comes out like that), so I gave him one.

My original Steampunk Cyberman has one too...

Nothing wrong with that. Poses can be a bitch! It's sometimes hard to make them look natural. That's what's so great about working with real people.

Promus-Kaa In reply to LordMelchet [2009-07-04 02:26:04 +0000 UTC]

Poses ARE hard - especially coming up with ones that aren't too overused.

Even the best artists use actual people as reference for their drawings!

Exactly! I used to pose in a mirror to get my poses right, but that's hard too.
Sports pics are a good reference

Haha, I thought I was the only one who posed in mirrors...now I feel less weird!!

However, I never thought about using sports pics. That's a great idea, thanks!

EX-cellent.

Hmm... I wonder what the micromonolithic circuits would be.

And what will you do after the Tenth Planet Cybermen? A Chumbley? A Yeti? Mr. Sin? The Kandyman?

Promus-Kaa In reply to Tawaki [2009-02-25 02:22:57 +0000 UTC]

I should try drawing the circuits!! That would be an interesting project...awesome idea!!

Wow, I'm impressed!! You gave me quite a nice list of classic (aka "canon") Who robots! I'd probably do the Chumbleys next since they're the most blatantly robotic. After that I'd probably do Kamelion! That would be a challenge...

Promus-Kaa In reply to LilyKnotwise [2009-01-24 02:26:20 +0000 UTC]

Haha, thanks!! My favorite Cybermen were the ones from "Invasion," and I thought that the rubber jumpsuit would work well for the Steampunk version, since it would provide good insulation against the Victorian-era electrical components attached to the person inside (except for the fingertips... ).

Which version of the Cybermen is your favorite?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LilyKnotwise In reply to Promus-Kaa [2009-01-28 05:45:48 +0000 UTC]

Weellll... It's hard to say, they're all really different and awesome in their own way. As far as how scary they can be, the new ones are the only ones that really do it for me, since they're actually quite convincing... But that's a given, since they had a bigger budget and better technology, costuming, etc.

But as far as pure awesomeness goes... I'm going to have to go with Tomb of the Cybermen cybermen... I laugh at the cheese, and yet I'm so into it. And they just stand out in my mind whenever I think of Old Skool Who cybermen.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Promus-Kaa In reply to LilyKnotwise [2009-01-30 01:49:56 +0000 UTC]

The new ones aren't even actual Cybermen, so they don't count! The question still stands, unanswered and lonely.

But about how the Cybusmen look "more convincing" - how so? Do you think that Darth Vader doesn't look as convincing as he could, due to budget restrictions or better technology and costuming? Because Cybermen and Darth Vader have a lot in common.

Both Mondasians (Cybermen) and Darth Vader began their lives as normal humanoid beings. Both have had limbs and some internal organs replaced with bionic counterparts. Both conceal these robotic parts with an outer covering. Both have chest units which monitor and control life support, and both wear helmets to supplement and enhance their senses. (Also, both speak through voice-boxes ).

But nobody says that Darth Vader doesn't look convincing as a cyborg, even though he's pretty much a Cyberman in black coverings - because he IS convincing. He doesn't have to look like he's "more machine than man," beacuse he just happens to cover it, like a Cyberman. Why wouldn't you?

I think the real Cybermen look pretty cool how they are, and they're entirely convincing as exactly what they're supposed to be! You see my point?

And "Tomb" isn't cheesy - it's scary as hell!!

LilyKnotwise In reply to Promus-Kaa [2009-03-25 01:59:42 +0000 UTC]

(wow, this reply has been here for a really long time and I only saw it now. Fail. Sorry. XD)

Anyway, I say the new Cybermen look more convincing because they really do look like they're made of metal. The old ones (that I remember) were always some sort of rubber or something similar, that was spray-painting silver. Also, the new Cyberman voices sound much more electronic.

HOWEVER, having said these things, I don't think that makes them BETTER than the older versions of the Cybermen. I mean, when I'm watching some older episodes with older cybermen, I'm totally into it and I totally buy that they're the real deal. They're completely convincing when I'm watching it. It's just from a more standoffish point of view that the new ones are more convincing. As in... If I were to show clips to someone who had never watched Doctor Who before, they'd probably think the new Cybermen were the "best".

I, however, in the end would have to pick the Tomb of the Cybermen cybermen as my definite favourite. (Although, granted, I haven't seen every single episode of Doctor Who, which probably includes some cybermen episodes. But that's a work in progress. )

LOL, it's okay, sometimes I don't get to comments for months!

The new ones ARE convincing as being metal robots - but the old ones weren't supposed to be robotic. They were essentially reanimated, necrotized corpses with robotic limbs who covered it all in a cloth-like body sheath and stuck a helmet on their heads (just like Darth Vader). As such, they are convincing - very much so. They're not SUPPOSED to be metal robots any more than Vader is supposed to be C-3PO, lol! You see what I mean?

I haven't seen every episode of Classic Who either, but I'm working on it too.

Ooooh, okay. I feel silly now, because I didn't know that. -_- In my defense, I was introduced to Doctor Who through the new series, but went back and watched the old one, so that's why I got mixed up. :3 Yeah, I do have to agree with you fully then.

And it's a hard task! There's so much. :S

You do know that the 2008 Christmas Special that they are currenlty filming involves Cybermen kinda like these ones? I think the modern Cybermen from the new series somehow get stuck in the the past in the Victorian Times and have to resort to doing something like this to survive.
