Or actually, “The Classic ‘joke’ ”.
Most of you might’ve already known that in those old games, Eggman flees from his machine and outruns Sonic to another machine every time. That’s one very important unexplained mystery about Eggman’s true strength and speed.
This idea is not original, of course.
I’ve seen some artworks similar to this around here, it’s just that I wanted to make one after watching that new Sonic trailer with classic Sonic in it. 
Just a quick art.^^ Sonic & Eggman are drawn in classic style for the simplicity.

I always assumed he had robot boots that made him run fast. Either that or Sonic purposely let him get away because there's no sport in beating up a slow moving middle aged fat man while you have super powers, and Sonic was less focused on murdering the guy as much as making him stop capturing animals and sticking them in robots.

Maybe Eggman has cybernetic legs. Or Sonic's not catching up to him on purpose because he doesn't wanna kill him. I mean, so Sonic catches up to Eggman when he's defenseless, and then what?

Well if you think about it with sonic having to do all that running just to get to him it stands to reason he'd be tired enough to let Eggman get away but they sat longer legs mean a longer stride.. So who knows?

It's not really just classic. Eggman is able to compete against Sonic in the Olympics, including is running events.

Fun fact: Eggman was originally to be the good guy, so he may be just as fast as Sonic, though we've never seen him ever have to run yet.

2. He's not fat. To fund his Badniks, Robotnik disguises himself with a fat suit and moustache
