It's definitely a curious and very intentional design decision. It's not as if any of the machines have any sexual characteristics on them. Although Pascal's voice is "feminine" the character is identified as "male" and doesn't ever seem to dispute that. There are "Mother" and "Father" and "Sister" machines but none of them have traditional gender traits except for what they identify as.
