“I don’t know about this,” Rainbow Dash almost sounded nervous.
“What do you mean? What could go wrong?” Scootaloo looked down at the bag.”You think he won’t like the color?”
“It’s not the color I’m talking about,” Rainbow said. “It’s everything else about it.” When Scootaloo’s expression turned befuddled she tried to clarify. “It’s...well...it.”
Scootaloo’s brow creased as she nodded slowly. “Uh huh.” A choir of shrieks and giggles filled the air, causing her to turn around.
There was a party going on behind them. Streamers and trees, a table full of food, and confetti covered the ground beneath a cracked open pinata, all of its sugary goodness leaking onto the ground as a dozen foals, and Pinkie Pie, jumped up and down in the shower of colored candy wrappers, scooping hoof fools of sweets into their specially prepared party pails. Safe to say there was enough candy spilled to keep each foal happy til next Nightmare Night.
“Ok I admit it!” Rainbow Dash caught Scootaloo by surprise. She turned to see Rainbow Dash looking down angrily at the long black storage bag laying next to her. “I am worried, at least a little bit.”
“Uh huuuh,” Scootaloo’s smile came about with deliberate steadiness. “I knew something was up the moment I told you what I was getting ‘tide for his birthday.” she paused contemplatively for a moment. “I was his age when I got one of these. He can handle it, Dash.”
“That’s what worries me.”
Scootaloo watched her surrogate sister quizzically. “Where in Equestria was this massive heap of concern when I was younger?” she asked. “You weren’t even half this messed up about me when I was tearing through Ponyville on my scooter.”
“You don’t get it,” Rainbow Dash shook her head. “He keeps getting out from under my nose, I-” she trailed away for a moment. “Every since I had Cherry I’ve developed this weird mom sense, you know? Whenever Cherry is about to get into some trouble, or at least most times, I can sense it, and I normally pounce on her before she can do something stupid...like blow herself up.”
Scootaloo grinned but hurriedly cinched it back when Rainbow Dash glared at her, clearing her throat to kill it further, but she could feel the heat in her cheeks.
Rainbow Dash continued. “Mom sense works with Hightide too, but when I feel it...” she steadily exhaled. “I swear to Celestia I have no idea how he does it, but one moment he’ll be next to me and the next he’s tossing himself face first down Ghastly Gorge.”
“Oh right, that.” Scootaloo scratched the back of her head. “I remember the one time I tried to prove to some dumb colts that I could fly,” her eyes grew wide from the memory. “How did I even survive that?”
“Beats me.” Rainbow Dash dead panned. “But last I heard, they head your fan club now, don’t they?”
Scootaloo grinned. “Yeah, you can say that,” she said. “About the gorge ordeal, among the other things, well, he is an earth pony,” Scootaloo watched the children playing. “Maybe he thinks he has to prove something to you.”
Across the field, another game was starting, something involving singing, dancing, and oddly rope. Rainbow Dash smiled as she watched Hightide try his best to find balance and dance to the song with his right hind leg tied together with the leg of one of his friends. Then her smile waned.
“He doesn’t have to prove anything to me. I’ve told him this.”
Scootaloo shrugged. “Eh, well what can you do when your mom’s a superhero, right?”
Rainbow Dash scowled. “Actually listen to me for starters.”
“Motherhood's really vexed you hasn’t it?”
Rainbow smiled wryly. “I’m the fastest there is and it’s still a challenge. Trust me, squirt, you’ll understand one day. And when that happens I’ll be the one giving you pointers just like old times.”
Scootaloo snorted light heartedly. “We’ll see.”
Soon the game ended and the party started to whine down. School mates said their goodbyes and scampered off for home until it was only Pinkie Pie and Hightide left at the party table. Pinkie talking animatedly about something while Hightide scarfed the last few slices of cake as he listened. Scootaloo chose until the end of the party to present her gift because she didn’t want to give away the surprise before she was ready to set it up.
"Hey kid!" Scootaloo yelled. Hightide looked up, his face covered in cake crumbs.
"Come over here, I have something for ya!"
Hightide nodded, scooped up one last hoof full of cake and trotted over three legged.
“He’ll learn, Dash. We’ll teach him.” Scootaloo said to rainbow dash. She nudged the large black bag fondly. “Maybe a few thousand feet up will take some of the crazy out of his system, who knows?”
_____
An Idea I got after looking at some old scootaloo fanart.
Rainbow's kids are definitely a handful but Hightide seems to be mysteriously more elusive.
Try and guess what he got for his birthday?
