Description I will be submitting a picture each month based on a different cryptozoological beast from different parts of the world.  Sorry this one took  a while to put up.  I know February's almost over but it was one of those pieces that just fought me the whole way.

This month's cryptid is the Owlman.  The Owlman, also known as the Cornish Owlman or Owlman of Mawnan is a cryptid from England that reminds me of how the Mothman is usually depicted.  This creature is said to be an owl-like creature the size of a man,  with claws, a wide grin, large wings and two-toed feet.  It is also often said to have large glowing (red) eyes.

You read more about him here- www.cryptopia.us/site/2010/12/…

What would happen if it meets black shuck or a gargoyle?

They are also church monsters

Wouldn’t God be aware of that?

One would think so.  They might just be protective spirits.  Just because people think they look scary, doesn't necessarily mean they are bad.

That is what I'm talking about! C-class cryptids like Owlman don't get enough credit for being one of the more badass mystery monsters out there. It's Mothman's lost cousin. lol great work btw!

pyro-helfier In reply to LTKArtwork [2017-05-25 02:34:37 +0000 UTC]

I agree, there's a lot of great ones out there that don't get much recognition. One of the most interesting things about cryptids is how many similar types there are all around the world.  This guy definitely seems like he could be in the same family as the Mothman.  Thanks!

You ever heard of the Batsquatch of Washington state? That's a pretty neat one as well. I guess I'd put that cryptid in the same realm as the Pigman of Northfield, Vermont (D-class I suppose?) They're both not very well known, but both are pretty cool nevertheless.

Yeah, I acctually left a comment on the one you drew. He sounds interesting... sort of like a cross between Bigfoot, the Mothman and the Ahool.  There's so many really cool under rated ones.  That's one of the reasons I started doing my calendars, because not only did I want to do my own take on some of the famous ones, but  I really enjoy introducing people to some odd creatures they may never have heard of.  I have a huge list of more that I want to do I've just been so busy lately that I haven't really had time for personal work.

Oh, I get ya! I rarely have time to draw anything that's not my comics, so drawing a Bigfoot or fan art of someone else's creation is definitely not on my priority list on a daily basis.

Right? I feel like there's never enough hours for artists to complete all the things they want to get done.  By the time I get to item #2 on the list  I've thought of 6 more I need to add to it.

Very nice piece, it looks like just the right blend of owl and human to be quite unsettling

I'm British and a cryptozoology buff and I've never heard of this one before

Ahhhhhhhhh the Owlman of Cornwall, This one is interesting, and owls are one of my favorite animal. I also see the similarities to the description of this and the Mothman which leads me to believe that they are the same, or at least the same species.

pyro-helfier In reply to Dracothestern [2016-08-15 23:28:03 +0000 UTC]

Cool   A lot of people who don't believe that Mothman exists believe that it was actually just an ordinary owl.  So it kind of makes sense that they are so similar.

Dracothestern In reply to pyro-helfier [2016-08-15 23:37:08 +0000 UTC]

Indeed ^^ I've heard the theories that it may be an owl. But no owl is that big, at least from what I know. Same with the Mothman (why was it called that anyway?). It's strange that the sightings of the Owlman only happened for a few day if I remember correctly.

Right? I'm not sure.  It is strange... that's what makes cryptids so interesting.

Kinda looks like a regular owl, only bigger
Maybe a different angle could have helped in portraying the creature

I get where you're coming from, but I kinda think he basically looks like just an oversized owl with a few tweaks anyway.

Do yoy think yo can do the black shuck? Or the Mokele mbembe? Or the loch Ness monster? If you don't know who the other forst three are, you should look them up. If you don't do requests, I understand.

pyro-helfier In reply to MetalBrony823 [2016-02-25 00:35:53 +0000 UTC]

I have heard of all of those.   While I don't usually take requests, since the cryptids are an on-going series I do try to keep peoples' suggestions in mind when I create my lists.  So I may do some of those in the future...  and also one of the might be on my current list for this year.
