I think you are for sure. You could try hiding subtle tints of other colours in the shadows that compliment each other (but will still contrast the lights). For example I'll put slight reds, purples and blues in the shadows of skin tone that has gold light. Even if the shadows aren't blacker versions of the base colour, I find it helps break up any monochrome and brings out all the colours in general.
