I love it, I had this animated image about a year ago and I lost it. I'm so glad I found this again and could give my appreciation. (And first comment, WOO! <3) I LOVE it.. Thank you so very much, perfect for describing the anatomy of Draenei for RP purposes to dummies.

wow, very very impressive. The texture and lighting in this really bring out the beauty of the draenei.
I play a draenei paladin, so two thumbs up, gorgeous work.

*Takes a good, long look at the model*

A few quick questions if you don't mind.

1. What program do you use? Currently rocking Maya 2010 myself.
2. Did you fix and/or tinker with the textures? They seem a bit more high-res than the stock in-game ones.
3. Is that a new texture for the hair, or did you tinker with the mesh? Looks like you added an alpha channel to the hair texture, but it also looks like you added some geometry as well.
4. What sort of things did you add to the rig (assuming you pulled the model with the WoW rig intact)? Or did you build the rig from scratch?

I understand if you don't want to answer any questions, but I thank you anyway in advance. ^_^

Hi! I use Blender, this one was in Blender 2.49b though I have recently switched to the new Beta, Blender 2.54. The textures for this one were originally texture painted but have since been baked (transferred along the normals) from the original game models. The overall difference in appearance though can be attributed to the use of ambient occlusion. The hair is actually Blenders hair particle system with a hair shader mapped along the strands. If I was to do this again though I would use poly hair and map alpha and strands accordingly. The rig, again was hand built. I studied the Mancandy FAQ and built it with different helpers and such. Even now knowing how to get the game models into Blender better, the rigs still don't like to transfer (the do transfer but are difficult to work with).

Hopefully that answers you questions (sorry for the late response). I do my best to answer questions and I don't mind them

She is gorgeous, you did a superb job with the model! Are you going to be offering the model for sale?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Quandtum In reply to VeeSwan [2010-08-28 12:00:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the compliment! As for selling, if only I could, that would be nice (I would like to try to make some $$$ for a renderer)... but Blizzard copyrights the Draenei, so it would be illegal to sell

So cool!
Did you use Blender for this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Quandtum In reply to Nenunial [2010-08-23 17:23:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yes, I used Blender for this with the internal renderer. I am considering trying a new render using an external and/or adjusting her skin to see if I can make her a little more realistic ... but that may be a while yet.

Nenunial In reply to Quandtum [2010-08-24 10:14:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh, okay It looks really good though, very realistic!

Might I ask about how you import character files from WMV to Blender? I'm so amazed by this pic, and though I'll probably fail at trying to figure out how to rig the character, would you mind if I asked you this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Quandtum In reply to Nenunial [2010-08-24 17:28:40 +0000 UTC]

This one is actually modeled (not a game model from WMV). However, I did use the WMV to create my references. Here is an example of WMV rendered out in Blender [link] If you scroll down in the comments there I have a quick list of how to export from WMV and import into Blender. In hindsight (and now more experienced), the way I would have created this "hires" model now would be to use the WMV import, retopo her (a feature in Blender) and then bake the textures.

I may make a video tutorial (on all this) someday. I've been meaning to try/practice such that I could make other Blender tutorials.

Yes, you can sculpt with Blender, though there is lots to learn first.
