Description Oh hey look I actually spent enough time on something to want to upload it to dA, hurp durp.

Dragons are so cheap.

Inspired to try the technique used by this guy here: [link]

Drawn entirely in the GIMP wheee I got so irritated with GIMP's selection tools like idk.

Well hi Dargen!
And thanks! I still think this is kind of rough, I could probably do better now.

This is beautiful. I will probably write you a nice big critique later, but I think I've already left too long commenting at all. >_<

Is it unhealthy if I get resounding choruses of WHERE MY MONEY AT? when looking at this?
I blame American society.

For some weird reason, Photoshop starts getting all bitchy when I try to do bigger pictures. Or at least it has been LATELY. I suspect something may be up with my comp.

ANYWAY. He's lovely. Though I do agree with Thalron on the wing abit. Teeny tiny!

Beautifully done, I love the texture and colors that you got in this. Great expression too

It is also nice to see you upload something to DevArt again.

You really can see a difference between your faster works and this one!! Well done! It really has more of a traditional art feel about it. Excellent.

I did notice though that the eyes and the bottom jaw are on a different plane/at an angle to each other..- but hey, some lizards perform great stretch n' twist exercises while eating, so it could be considered accurate in that sense.

Love the colours!

Well done!!

I just had a look at the link,- you definitely got the technique down pat.. maybe include some horizon/distance next time to add size to your beast..- having seen his horrendous underbite, I think your jaw problem is miniscule..
Good show old chum!

Spoonfayse [2010-02-23 21:14:37 +0000 UTC]

Whoa that is amazing.
Clearly you are destined for greatness!

Durr. If I were you I'd probably add some shine on the highlighted scales and teeth to bring them out a bit more but I'm a bit of a shine whore like that.
And maybe fade the colours of the side of the head that's further from the viewer so it looks more three-dimensional. The lighting on the bumps on the head make it look a bit uneven.

Otherwise... Oh gosh the detail (particularly on the snout, bottom jaw, the ear...things and wings) and colours and unf @__@ How much time did you spend on this?

aaa wut no

Hmmm those are very good points, I may go back in and edit it.
Thank you a lot! C:

Derp, I'm not sure how long I took... must have been between 2 1/2 and 4 hours because I don't usually work longer than that without getting too fidgety.
Oh wait chat transcript says 5 hours. There you go then. xD

*clicks the favourite button an inordinate number of times*

It's so cool seeing this up close! The lighting and texture turned out really well. MAN, WHEN ARE MY CLASSES OVER, I WANT TO DRAWWWWWW.

...and either my grip on reality is slipping, or you mirrored it when you finished!

QuazarShark In reply to Adapa [2010-02-23 23:20:29 +0000 UTC]

Yes I did. xD

I decided I wanted the yellow down in the bottom right, as that's considered the "ending" corner in traditional layout teaching, derp.
Why yes I'm using something I learned at school wow.

MAN, WHEN YOUR CLASSES ARE OVER I WANT TO SEE YOU DRAWWWWWW

Adapa In reply to QuazarShark [2010-02-24 19:51:29 +0000 UTC]

NOW THAT MY CLASSES ARE OVER YOU CAN SEE ME DRAWWWWWW

Also, I've been messing around a bit with painting in the GIMP. I'm making much more liberal use of layers, and that's making it feel a lot more like good-old oil painting!

...minus the 24-hour drying time between every layer, of course.

QuazarShark In reply to Adapa [2010-02-24 20:39:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah that's one of the main reasons why painting real media frustrates me so much, the paint always seems to either dry the moment you put it down or it seems to take hooours...
And I don't even use oil. xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Adapa In reply to QuazarShark [2010-02-25 17:54:07 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah. Though I suppose I have more of an issue with acrylic paints than oils on that front. If I ever try to do too much acrylic at once, some begins to dry and suddenly it feels like you're painting on a weird rubbery mud.

With oils, though, I can spend as much time as I want on one layer, spend a lot of time reflecting on it during the day of drying time, and come back knowing just what to do for the next one. So it actually sort of helps me.

The only thing that painting in real media has for me that digital media don't is the feel. I'm a tactility junkie. I love the feel of painting with a brush, and being able to actually touch and feel the texture of the painting when it's dry.

Someone mentioned food?! Where?! Oh, it's a picture... A very good one though XD The lighting and face are really well done, though that wing off to the side looks a little funky... That could be from perspective or something xD

O__O That is so cool!
That's really all I can say.

/this is a useless comment. D:

QuazarShark In reply to mgrayman [2010-02-23 07:34:17 +0000 UTC]

Not useless at all, thank you!

When I work this long on something (usually I'm such a cheap artist, I hardly ever spend longer than and hour and a half) I get all paranoid at the end that I've ruined it, so it's good to get feedback of any kind.

You're welcome. C:
Your dragon is really awesome, so you shouldn't get paranoid about it.
And I just noticed the title right now. hahah
