Description A small tutorial (see some explanations at the bottom of this description) for my latest traditional mixed media drawing "Jack Sparrow (drawing)".
I photographed the steps 1-11 with my Canon EOS 600D (EOS Rebel T3i) without flash. I'm sorry for the bad quality, but the light conditions were suboptimal. Step 12 is the scan.

Please don't upload my pictures somewhere else without my permission. Don't infringe copyright!

Here are some more detailed step by step tutorials/descriptions + the finished drawing:

These are the different tools I used for every step (and some side notes):

step 1: paper A4 (210x297mm, 190 g/m²), Faber-Castell pencil HB and  set square + ruler + Faber-Castell pencel H3 (for the grid)
step 2: Faber-Castell Perfection 7056 (eraser pencil) to erase the grid lines
step 3: Faber-Castell pencil HB or Faber-Castell grip 1345 HB 0.5 for detailed line art
step 4: eraser, Faber-Castell Perfection 7056 to erase the outlines a bit
step 5: Copic Ciao and Sketch marker for the marker base layer (I would finish the marker base layer for other drawings first, but in this case I continued with the face, because it's easier to mess up a small face than to mess up the marker base layer)
step 6: Faber-Castell Polychromos artists' colour pencils (usually I start with black and sometimes white details when I draw with colored pencils)
step 7: Faber-Castell Polychromos artists' colour pencils, set square
step 8: Copic Ciao and Sketch marker (marker base layer)
step 9: Faber-Castell Polychromos artists' colour pencils (colored pencil layer, details)
step 10: uni-ball Signo pigment ink um-153 white for white highlights
step 11: Faber-Castell Polychromos artists' colour pencils (to define/scratch the white gel pen lines/points)
step 12: edited scan (a.k.a. destruction of contrast and colour)

Thank you! 12 is the scanned drawing! That's why the colors and contrast are a bit different.

Wow, this is incredible O.o. How many years of drawing(learning) did it take you to reach this level?

Thank you! I try to improve since 2014, so it took me ~2 years. Before my drawing break (2008-2013) I drew not very often and just for fun. See also my improvement meme: Improvement Meme

Quelchii In reply to tannievanrijn [2016-03-01 12:44:25 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they're expensive, but they're also really good. I bought my Polychromos many years ago. At first I bought just 60, because of the price... then it took me 2 years until I had all 120 Polychromos (I bought the single pencils).

And this is where the magic happens - ich dachte, sowas hier hilft mir zu begreifen, wie du arbeitest - nope, ich kann's mir immer noch nicht vorstellen, es bleibt unbegreiflich XD

Quelchii In reply to Woodswallow [2016-02-21 00:26:32 +0000 UTC]

Lol!

Woodswallow In reply to Quelchii [2016-02-21 11:52:00 +0000 UTC]

Quelchii In reply to Woodswallow [2016-02-21 12:49:47 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Woodswallow In reply to Quelchii [2016-02-21 13:05:27 +0000 UTC]

Ah, ok, gut

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Quelchii In reply to Woodswallow [2016-02-21 15:18:14 +0000 UTC]

Wissen aneignen... Kamerastativ kaufen... blabla).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Woodswallow In reply to Quelchii [2016-02-21 15:47:50 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Quelchii In reply to Woodswallow [2016-02-21 15:55:36 +0000 UTC]

Hab mal 10 Jahre Klavier gespielt... lang lang ist's her.

Woodswallow In reply to Quelchii [2016-02-21 21:59:13 +0000 UTC]

Und coole Musik macht auf jeden Fall was her.

Awesome Sauce!!! Thank you. For step 5, you saying it's best to finish the face (start details etc) here so you won't mess up later? Just wanting to understand. I am HORRIBLE with people. Give me any animal or inanimate object, and I'm magnific. Give me a person... they all end up looking like Yoda! lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Quelchii In reply to Mrs-Elizabeth [2016-02-18 19:58:56 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!
I depends on the picture. In this drawing his face is just very small, so it's much more difficult to match the likeness and because of that easier to mess something up. Once I've messed up a face (erased too much and destroyed the paper)... Then I had to trash the drawing after 8 hours and draw everything again. If I had started with the face I would've saved some hours. For normal portraits I finish the marker base completely, because in this case it's more likely to mess up the marker base (mistakes can't be erased!) and easier to correct mistakes in the face.

Very helpful! Thank you so much! It takes me forever to get smooth skin. Now I know a bit more about what to do to speed things up. You are a talented artist and a treasure to others who are trying to learn. Please keep going forever ad ever.

Oh, and I hate to do this but my mom used to be a talented artist until she lost her eyesight. She's raising money to help find a cure and no one is donating and the deadline is the 26th, so I was wondering if you maybe might mention it? As artists, our eyes are our life! I feel bad for the plug, but finding a cure could impact all our lives. Here is the link:

I apologize sincerely if you dislike this, I completely understand. I've just run out of people to ask in-person and going door-to-door earned $15 after 4 hours. I don't know what else to do. I'm so sorry.

No worries about not having any money, just wondering if you might spread the word. It's okay either way though.

Yay! Thanks for making this, I'm sure I will pick up some new tips
I see you use grid as well, that makes me feel better because I do it too, it saves time and always looks way better
I'm all about the colour, I hate the sketch part! (personally speaking).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Quelchii In reply to Nislande [2016-02-14 18:16:49 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! Thank you!
Yes, the grid method really saves time. And I'm also always afraid that I mess something up and discover it after 8 hours while colouring (when I don't use the grid). I admit that I prefer colouring, so I just use the grid although I could do it without it. But sometimes it's also king of freeing to draw something without the grid (for example sketches).
