The theory would be it to be a "turbo-claudia" system, in which the propeller engine would work as a cooling system as well as a propulsion method, giving the vehicle some extra speed and the hability to remain airborne even if the Claudia engine is too damaged to work properly -in the anime and manga, failure in this main system means certain death, as the Vanship type vehicles have no wings and once dropped from the sky, they're little more than fancy rocks with people trapped inside.
