Description
It was getting late, as the middle-aged woman drove down the dark road. The sun had already set on the horizon, but the night sky was slightly lit by the faded colors from the sun.
As the woman drove, she would yelp a yawn from then and now and occasionally she would spot a pair of headlights in her rear-view mirrors. As it got darker and darker by time, the woman decided to settle down for the night, but didn’t know where. Up ahead, she spotted a bright, glowing, red sign titled Motel. As she pulled in, she noticed that the place wasn’t the nicest or the cleanest. It was runned-down, as parts of the motel were falling apart.
Walking into a fairly small lobby, a slight ring came off from the door opening, indicating to a young man at the desk that there is a new arrival.
“Excuse me,” the woman asked politely.
“Do you have any open rooms tonight?”
“Yes!” The man exclaimed, as he handed her a key.
“Your room is 204,” he said.
Opening the door to the last available room, she carried her luggage inside and sat it on a nightstand beside a large queen sized bed. Tired and exhausted from the long drive, she decided to sit on her bed and watch some T.V. to unwind. Using the remote to turn on the T.V., she noticed that one of the channels were static, but as she flipped through the channels she than noticed that all the stations were nothing, but static.
“Crappy reception,” she mumbled.
“Might as well just read,” she asked herself.
Turning to her side, she reached into her bag and pulled out a hard covered book. Opening the book to the 5th chapter, she read. A sudden “knock” rang off the door, pulling her attention away from the book. There was a sudden pause and then another knock and then there was a sudden pause and then a knock. This pattern kept up for at least two-minutes straight, until the knocking became more consistent.
Knock, knock, knock… as the woman sat there on her bed, an open book in her lap and a puzzled look across her face. Knock, knock, knock… as the knocking at her room door continued. Than there was a quiet pause, until she heard more knocking, but this time more louder. KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK… as the woman jumped back a bit in the bed, startled by the sudden loud knock at her room door. KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK… as the loud knocks continued. KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK… finally the woman reached to the side of the bed, flailing her arms around to reach the room phone. When she dialed a number in to reach the front desk, there was no ringing. Indicating to her that phone doesn’t work.
“Shit!” The woman cursed at herself.
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK… as she sat there on the bed, frightened. Until the loud knocking suddenly just, stopped. Still frightened by the incident that just happened, she managed to push herself off the bed. Walking to the door, shaking, she looked into the peeping glass hole in the door and noticed that there was no one there.
Morning came, as the woman got changed out of her pajamas and packed her bag as she got ready to check out of the room. Walking out of the room, as she inhaled the morning air she noticed something out of the corner of her eye. Looking to her right, a couple of doors down, she noticed a door was open, as a couple of police cars were parked in front of it. The area was blocked off by yellow tape and printed on that yellow tape was CAUTION . Within the area, she noticed a body covered over a thick, black, blanket. Confused by the scene, she continued walking toward the lobby to get herself checked out.
Driving away, she wondered if the knocking she heard from last night and to what seemed like a murder scene she saw this morning were in anyway, connected. But one thing is for sure, the woman will never understand about the mysterious knocking she heard from last night in her room 204.
