Both anime and manga totally missed the chance to ship these two properly, in my most humble opinion.

The manga treats them a bit better than the anime did actually. At least in the manga, there is a slight hint that they could be together romanticallyΒ in the future when he said "even this music is something we made together right?", and Maka got all embarrassed and blushed.

Yeah, I'd definitely agree with that. On the other hand though, I can kind of see why they didn't pair them now. It's on par with the idea of 'duty over personal satisfaction', with the two of them working together because they're compatible, but putting everything they've got into doing their job and setting aside things that could otherwise cause problems with that. It's less evident early on but grows as the series goes on.

That's actually very true! When I was first introduced to the series by my friend, she told me that she shipped them. At first I didn't want to because the way I first saw them was the obvious: She's the meister, he's her weapon. Of course Soul would die for her/go through hell and high-water for her. That's his DUTY (Vanellope don't even...)
But the morei watched the anime, the more it started to make sense, and the more I caucht on to the hints. But they can't just explore them just yet because of the situation at hand of course. And another thing to think about: their ages. They aren't TOO young to understand love, but they don't know how to deal with it properly just yet.
It is obvioust that they love each other, but they aren't IN love yet.
