Description
I didn't always see Gaster as a genocide-runner. I think of him similar to Bowser from Super Mario Bros.; Misunderstood, probably has a troubled past, looks bad but deep down has good intentions. Some have depicted Gaster as Sans and Papyrus' father/caretaker. A theory of which I have accepted.

Imagine this;
Gaster, forgotten father of Sans and Papyrus, lives in an undiscovered place in the Underground. He may seem scary, but that's because he nearly lost his life in the war between Humans and Monsters. (This was before Sans and Papyrus' birth.) A few years later, he had in his care a toddler Sans and a baby Papyrus. Between the two of them, Gaster had to put his work and studies of differing realities on hold and had no time to attend a part-time job. When Sans was old enough to babysit Papyrus while their father was away, Gaster worked as a waiter at Grillby's to feed his boys. When Sans and Papyrus grew up and moved away, Gaster packed everything in their old home and moved away to a secluded area outside of the known realms of the Underground. Only Sans and Papyrus know of this place and have promised their father to never reveal it's location to anyone. Gaster has been deep in his studies, undisturbed, ever since.
