Description Okie dokie, here is proof that I can (a) actually paint and (b) stick with only one kind of medium if I really want to. Do you guys have ANY IDEA how hard that is for me??

I did this with watercolor and gouache (which is opaque watercolor).

This was the third picture that went into the DST Art from the Cube contest in 2007.

Were there doubts about your work, young lady????
Who were those yoyos? I get blown away with everything you create.......so blown away that I truly do circle the globe and come right back to the source and start again!! As I have always told you, you are such an inspiration!! Especially for my work!! I, too, only use one medium and always will because it works for me...... and helps others become encouraged, just like you do for me. Look at the list of clubs right beside this comment!! Does anyone truly doubt you? If so, send them my way, and I'll be more than happy to point out their shortcomings, in NO uncertain terms! Keep Rockin' Rachel!!!!!!......jack

rachaelm5 In reply to jshapeshifter [2011-04-28 04:22:34 +0000 UTC]

LOL - No, no doubts. It just amuses me to think that I have multiple-medium ideology so firmly ingrained in my brain that it takes *more* effort to use a single medium skillfully than it does for me to combine wet and dry media as I've done for the last several years. People liked this piece a whole lot, and Mom bought it from me after its second public showing, she liked it so much. I've no fears about the response to my occasional forays into "proper" art disciplines.

This is one of the few watercolor-only paintings I've done in the last several years. And amazingly, I didn't use salt at all. The temptation to do so was ferocious, I tell you...

It's odd; I had not painted a watercolor piece in several years, and this one just popped out! I was as surprised as anyone that it turned out pretty well.

I hadn't touched my watercolors for a proper watercolor painting in several years - I was trying to show my sister how to play with the brushes and colors more than anything else. I made a good start on this picture, though, so I decided to go ahead and finish it - without colored pencils! For me, that's kinda scary.

This is gorgeous! I love the colors. I've never been all that great with watercolor myself, it all runs into a huge blob of color, so I prefer oils. I love the way it looks when done right though.

rachaelm5 In reply to fireflyskys [2007-08-08 22:32:35 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much!

I think it was sheer luck that this piece didn't go all to purple mud. Half the trick with watercolor is knowing exactly when to stop, and that makes it a very tricky medium for those of us obsessed with working the details to death. I'm pleased as punch that this one turned out as well as it did, and I almost dread the next painting because I remember how difficult it is to stop!

Oils and I have never gotten on well. I discovered during college that I have a preference for mediums that dry quickly - acrylics and watercolor worked much better for me than oils and alkyds. Oils *did* go all to mud on me almost every time. I greatly admire all of the artists who can bend the messy stuff to their will.
