Description This is the product of about two weeks' worth of lunch hour doodling and coloring. I made this with Prismacolor Verithin pencils - just the measly little 12-color set - as an exercise in effective use of a limited color range. It's great for practicing a layered approach to coloring, rather than my usual tendency to smash the colors together like clay.

To answer a couple of questions that people have posed:

I did draw this with pencil first. I erased the pencil lines for each section (usually a loop of body or one set of feathers) as I colored. I wanted the dragon to look softer than my inked-and-colored work, and this seemed the best way to do so.

Quick addition: The beastie is my own visualization of the Mayan Quetzlcoatl, or feathered serpent.

You bet. Β Feathered serpents, with or without wings, are definitely among my favorite critters.

I like the subdued color, as if she is quietly watching, off to the sidelines rather than up front in your face.Β  But let the unwary beware.

This was an interesting exercise in and of itself, given that there are only four or five colors in there in the first place. Β  Β Thanks, Steve!

What I don't like is that there is too much detail in too little space, so it's very difficult to appreciate it all at a glance, so instead you have to focus on each section separately to truly see and enjoy what is there...

...BUT THE COLORS ARE ALL SO PRETTY AND OMG THE SOFT COLORING. ALL IS FORGIVEN.

rachaelm5 In reply to spirulina [2011-04-10 02:20:39 +0000 UTC]

LOL - Slamming too much detail into a very small space is one of the things I *live* for... However, I'll agree with you on this one. My scanner does *not* like Prismacolor Verithin pencils. For some reason, it captures all of the granularity and not enough of the color gradation. It makes for a fairly poor digital image; the original, in spite of the gobs of detail, reads more clearly. Yes, that's not help here...

...Oh good, I'm forgiven.

LOL - That jumping onto your table becomes a bit of a problem when the dragon weighs six tons...

The background is actually quite neat. You managed to blend those colours very well so that it seems like one colour, but you can defintely see the colours that make it up. I like how you darkened it near the dragony creature .

Anyway, beautiful work. I like the shine effect that bits of it have as well.

I still think this is the best of my lunchtime doodles - it's also one of the most complex, and was one of the most time-consuming. And I did it with, what, four colors on the beastie itself. *headshake* I didn't manage to get the same kind of sense of completion on the other drawings I've done over lunch, though I did hit closer with the purple phoenix. Blast! I need to figure out what I did RIGHT!

I like this one the best of my lunchtime doodles right now, and it was the first. Y'd think I'd improve with experience, but I've been experimenting with my color usage in these drawings and they don't all turn out as well as this one did... Ah well. The learning experience has been useful, at least.
