Thanks! It was based on a photo which helps, but it was tricky nonetheless let's just pretend the horse's shadow is lost in the dust he made - I ran out of time to work out the angle properly!

no tracing gives it the humanistic quality that people dont know they love. did you grid out the pic and page? it helps me to break shit down into smaller units otherwise my brain explodes

I don't grid because I hate rubbing out all the lines!
I just look at things not as the objects they are but as lines. If a line is near horizontal I judge how far off horizontal it is and how long it is in proportion to everything else. And if a line is nearer to vertical I judge how far away from vertical it is! It doesn't give perfection but as you said it gives that humanistic quality.
