but how can a flying being use a musket?
i am working with a friend on a comic book about anthro creatures in a 16-19 century like world
we have anthro bats
imagine an anthro bat with wings in a napoleonic like suit using a musket in air
can dat work?
aren't fliers more like cavalry?

Well I really doubt you could fire that, or even hold it that way in flight... The military this is situated in uses a mixed force of units, not making much difference between pony kinds. Volunteers and conscription were basic of this army, unicorns, earth ponies and pegasi were usually mixed together to create numerous formations. The equipment differed from role to role, rank to rank rather than kind to kind which was somewhat chaotic. The presentation of muskets was an attempt to remedy the lack of organized air units and to protect the formations from air attacks.

About the anthro bat though... i can imagine it could work with hands even if the accuracy would be questionable. After all at that period Dragoons were ranged cavalry around Europe.

thanks for help
but still, dragoons where land units not air units
shooting a musket from air?
must think about that
reiters usually had pistols who were also used in meele

Aye but there is no shooting from air with muskets, rather dropping steel bolts from saddlebags... gets the job done >_>

how about this
bats launching air assault on enemy with lances and sabers
and they have a pistol for short range in melee combat

sounds good but welcoming fire from crossbows and muskets doesnt sound appealing...

yes they could use terrain for fair advantage though... charging head on onto steady formation is suicide... Napoleon's general did this in one battle against english and wasted his cavalry...
What I'm trying to say is that in sky you have no advantage other than distance at this point.

but a flying creature with a musket just standing is just a sitting duck
maybe speed and agility are the key of winning

well as I said SeΓl's military was a little chaotic... it was not constructed on complex chain of command with various squads with different specialization. Cheap solution to get many soldiers relatively fast... and there was no time for determining the military while there were more important matters at hoof.

I was thinking of drawing pegasus holding something in their wings. I saw ideas like that earlier on deviantart and I love them. Guns are one use of it XD

hah, its quite nice idea but holding weapons in wings kills the flying purpose ey

Well, wings still could be 2 additional "hands" while standing on the ground (at least of pegasus )
+ Rainbow Dash could hold up to 3 apple ciders instead of one c:

Yeah, remember the golden rule about ranged weaponry:
aiming IS important.
especially if you're not fighting solo.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Raedin In reply to PonyCleverBlue [2014-11-18 21:24:05 +0000 UTC]

I can imagine muskets being effective in land formation where breaking in flight to fight off the attackers might screw it up quite hard. Especially with combined military, where the kinds are not necessarily serving separate, specific roles.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PonyCleverBlue In reply to Raedin [2014-11-18 21:26:27 +0000 UTC]

Imagine the whole squad of musketeer pegasus, aiming at the ground formation
with their lack of stability.
while those on the ground just use the supporters and have all the time to hold their guns
ready on position, waiting till pegasus fly within range.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Raedin In reply to PonyCleverBlue [2014-11-18 21:47:21 +0000 UTC]

That would clearly not work for the attackes :c
They are not meant to fend off their own kin though ... rather other enemies such as Griffons, Chnagelings and whatnot... you could name anything! Necromancers! Fiends! Maybe even dragons! Or... mmm... hnnngg... FAERIES!
Swarm of lead flying towards the other line is always a welcome event... as long as you are not the other line~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PonyCleverBlue In reply to Raedin [2014-11-18 21:48:37 +0000 UTC]

Well... they'd not work well against breezies, that's for sure.
Even though there are not many breezies at war with ponies.

Lol, you would just need a darn net...
And they would work I dare to guess, if I recall correctly a little blow of wind can quite rek them... just imagine the balls flying around.

It's been a long time since SeΓl Stardust lead the expedition to further explore western lands. Nopony returned, which to your majesty Celestia at that time seemed obvious that none might have survived... But few decades later first traders brought in the goods from faraway lands, eventually establishing steady trade route to our state of Westfold. She was the first Γ‰r DΓ to rule independently from Equestrian laws, forming her own for her subjects. The lands appeared to be rich and healthy, finest wine came from the black soil and many velvet cushions and curtains used in canterlot were made there.
The fact that somepony who was supposed to explore foreign lands in the name of Equestria have established new state without any mention was quite not in accord to what Celestia had in mind... but at that time there was no sister standing by her side to aid her in "persuading" Stardust to subordinate. So the state grew, the trade thrived and ponies travelled there and back ever so often... until... well that's not really as pretty story...
