A beautiful piece on a beautiful fish.  I have a small school of 8 in my 40 gal breeder with some rainbowfish.  They all get along swimmingly.

Gorgeous. Just gorgeous. Did you use Frisket or any other water-blocking fluids to get the appearance of those scales? Or is that just a more opaque white applied to the topmost layer? This is beautifully simple, easy to read, and subtle!

I just drew the white edges in with a white gel pen.

Thanks for all the kind words!

You really could illustrate a guide to popular aquarium fish. Your fish paintings look like they popped out of a Peterson's guide!

I've never kept rummys. I've heard that they're a but more finicky about water conditions than other tetras, confirm/deny?

Supposedly they have a really high mortality rate when newly introduced to the aquarium. Something like only 10% survive the first two weeks in a new tank. As far as I know they are not typically bred in the aquarium because they are slow to mature (??) and most are wild-harvested. I think the moral of the story is that they are sensitive to change.  This is just what I've heard, though. I had tremendous success with mine and so far they've been completely indestructible, so I dunno!

Yikes, that's a steep loss. It's in keeping with what I've heard about wild-harvested fish, too: they tend to be much more finicky about aquarium conditions than species that have been bred in aquaria and presumably have evolved a greater tolerance for captive life.

They're cute, though! I'm glad yours have done fine. It always surprises me to find out which species breed well in captivity and which don't.

XD I'm partial to the neon and glowlight tetras, but these look cute too!

These guys are my favourite tetra too, at least of the species I've kept so far. I had a group of ten or so in my 75 (again before I moved, they went with the tank to a fish club member when I left). You've captured the pearlescent, purple sheen they get when they are healthy very nicely.

Do you use watercolour for the black outline and white highlights as well?

In this case the black outline is pencil and the white is gel pen. I probably should have specified.

Thanks for the nice comments!

You are most welcome. I am the worlds biggest sucker for fish illustrations. Love 'em. Makes me miss my aquariums.
