Description Resketch of 2 of my 2011 designs from the justice league piece.

Obviously let's start with the basic elephant in the room. I chose purposely to pair 2 versions of what is essentially the same character, side by side this time. My  design for these 2 was always going to be influenced by that basic concept. Power girl is older and grew up in a different world... but she is still Kara.

My Supergirl design is fairly traditional. Piping, cuff,s dual tone blues, some pretty spiffy looking boots... I only wanted to alter her about as much as I did her cousin... but to also feel very much like a child of the late 90's... but her counterpart.... that was a chance to have a little more fun.

I have never been a fan of Powergirls design. The gloves, the bathing suit, the oversized breasts... I mean unless Supergirl got some krytponian implants or had a kid that no one ever mentions... her breasts would not grow that much from her late teens/early twenties to whatever age Powergirl is. It's silly. The halter top is silly too, but she is bulletproof and she can wear what she wants... Both of them.

Anyway, I wanted them to still feel like the same person at different stages of life. Powergirls outfit includes pants rather than a skirt, a more closed off, over the shoulder cape with a collar, an almost inverse quality to the color distribution etc. Wherever there is gold on Supergirl, there is silver on Powergirl. Red piping becomes blue piping. Red boots to blue boots etc.

I was a bit indulgent in giving her bell bottoms but like I said (different age, different world)... I honestly think of her fashion sense as coming from a world that was stuck int he 70's

I didn't really change much here from my 2011 designs. I did choose (on Powergirl) to forgo the long vest from my original design in favor of the new cape, which leaves the infamous cleavage window that she has become known for... only now it is in the shape of the house of El "shield"... and I altered her belt buckle. Aside form that, I took a little bit of the details out of the belts.

and that's it really.

But you will earn storm with this concept. The original costume is some kind of untouchable for many fans. Of course because of it's sexyness (which will none confess for sure however). Sex sells, you know, and the (superhero) comic business is no exception. Especially because most consumers are males.

That demographic is changing rapidly... and personally I still find this one sexy. Fashion and function are at least as important as silhouette. It's just a bit more practical at the same time. I caught flack back in 2011 for removing supers underoos a while before the movie or comics did it, but I always try to go with a practical reason for my choices. Concept and character precede design every time for me.

In Supes case my point was that his look had been influenced by boxers, wrestlers, and strongmen at the time of his conception, thus making the outside briefs an acceptable referral within his cultural context, but as that context had faded from our culture, he wouldn't have grown up with it and thus would not find it acceptable... There was never any such reason for Powergirls bottom half. It was purely aesthetic... So thinking about it and applying an internal logic, I just couldn't justify her flying around in something that she honestly wouldn't wear.

The one I'm expecting the most grief about is actually Starfire, because if anyone's personality would justify skimpiness, it would be her. That's why I have put off my design description on hers up unto this point but trust me it will be worth the read.

Vampirella is another case...

very much so... but Vampires are always steeped in underlying sexuality as a rule of thumb. Seduction is purposely a part of her agenda and that's never really been concealed or misdirected.
