Description Wedding Ring

This ring I wear—
On hand, once bare
This symbol that I bear—
Beautiful, like you.

I never wanted diamonds
Eschewing that cold rainbow
I wanted something blue
Sapphires…something that I knew
Diamonds were truly new.

I met you.
Someone stronger,
Sober, loving, true—
There are so few
So few like you.

And what did you think of when you met
And set your eyes on me?
Sharing another drink
Stronger than your tea
And a bond
Breathed in, then yawned
As you brought it from the sink…
We knew we were in sync
I accrued you from beyond—
You, so eager to respond.

This ring I wear
Your ring, there
Upon the hands
Both bare—
Will shine, will gleam
And we will see them and will beam
These rings
This thing
The love of diamonds,
A better dream
So much to us they mean
So much to me you mean
Such power
Such fervor
In such a little thing….

Let the bells of our love ring
Let the gold and diamonds sing
Let the sun glint and bring
So much love
Wrapped up tightly
Screaming out so mighty
In a wedding ring.

It seems the years go more quickly the longer that I live.

Sappy, but yes, happy.

I think I read somewhere once that time does feel quicker the longer you live. In our perspectives, when we're twenty it's about half of our lives we've felt, even though really we're only just adults. I find that weird, but I can't talk from personal experience yet.

I read this one after viewing a few comments on your profile expressing appreciation for it and in admiration of it. It's a refreshing romantic 'feel-good' poem that I enjoyed reading. It's creative and considerate of you to honor your bond in such kind words regarding the symbol of your union.

I'm glad you found something worthwhile in it...as a few of my commenters have pointed out, it's not an amazing piece of work. Just a little "diddy" for my husband.

First congratulation! And second this poem is beautifully written! I also read your journal and i think it shows how pretty, sweet and kind you are from inside. I think your husband is very lucky to have you. Congratulation once again.

Thank you for the time you took to read both the poem and the journal and comment--I know that's rather arduous, but it is very appreciated, so thank you.

I am humbled by the praise you give me, but love to think that someone is out there thinking those things. Thank you for telling me.

Thanks for the comment!

I was reading up about the history of wedding rings...they most likely appeared in Ancient Rome in the form of a "fede" ring (a steel ring that joins together a pair of hands for its decoration---kind of a prelude to the Claddah (sp?) ring of Ireland). "Fede" means "faithful", and these rings were giving out at the time of a betrothal, with the hands facing in on the wearer's hand; symbolizing that they "belonged" to someone.

Last factoid: Romans most likely adopted the tradition of wearing the ring on the third finger of the left hand from the Egyptians; who believed that the blood flow from that finger went straight into the "vene (or veneris) amoris)---a vein that flowed directly to the heart.

I'm sure thats more than you ever wished to know, but I wanted to give you a special reply because you took the time to comment on my poem. Thank you!

I'm not the only one to want a birthstone for my ring! Hooray!

rainonwednesday In reply to Beastlygrrl [2011-10-12 18:38:36 +0000 UTC]

LOL--my birthstone is ruby, which I love, but unfortunately only the extremely expensive rubies have that beautiful sanguine hue---to contrast, a blue sapphire is always blue. Sometimes a little paler, sometimes very dark---but never pink like a cheap ruby would be. I highly admired this quality and collected several pieces..

I really, really love jewelry! I probably sound shallow, but I just think that for posterity's sake, there is nothing better than a gemstone. I want to give the pieces I've collected and will continue to collect to my family (should my husband and I ever decide to have one! We're still really young!) and they can carry the tradition on as well.

It wasn't before I wanted to get married though that I thought diamonds were worth having....I've got a strange belief that women shouldn't buy their own diamonds, that they should be gifts---at least at first. That's perhaps old fashioned of me; I hope I didn't offend.

I'm not usually one for poetry, but this stanza:
"I never wanted diamonds
Eschewing that cold rainbow
I wanted something blue
Sapphires…something that I knew
Diamonds were truly new. "

Oh my gosh. That's exactly like me. So I kept reading, and it's really beautiful. Simple and sweet. I hope one day I'm that lucky too, and that I'll actually like the daimond too.

My husband is Canadian, so he bought me a Canadian diamond---it has a infinitesimal maple leaf etch on the bottom with a laser (you can't see it unless you use a high power microscope) so to make it more special for me, a U.S. citizen. I had never wanted diamonds until I found him. I hope you find your "diamond" when the time is right for you.

Thanks so much for the comment!

You got barely any comments for making it up onto the front page.... I just wanted to say how incredibly sweet and breath taking this is... that you can write about it almost.... easily.... You have a happy marriage and I only wish the best for you and your husband! You are a fantastic writer and I love this poem now oh so much... It gives hope ^^ since movies nowadays portray marriage as something that can be easily discard... But this poem makes me think that marriage is something set in stone that should be cherished and enjoyed for every second of every day....
Oh and happy anniversary!

The front page of what?

I am so glad that my view of marriage refreshed your own take on it. I see a lot of unhappy marriages; some couples simply become roommates or daycare providers....

Who is to say that won't happen to us? It's up to us. So far, we're doing great. Thank you for your kind wishes, and just know that when I hear (read) a statement like yours, it makes fighting to keep the marriage so much easier.

Thank you so much for the time it took you to write out your thoughts, and praise this poem. It's greatly appreciated.

No, indeed it is not. It was a simple little ditty that my husband encouraged me to post. I post just about everything I write, so a portion of it is terrible or just too simple.

Thank you for your honesty. Below, if you are interested, are some more complex works. If you take a look at them, let me know what your teacher would think

I was very surprised to see that this piece was so well-liked. I agree with you and your teacher.

I have to agree, although the message behind it is so beautiful. It just doesn't flow nicely and the rhyming is far too forced.
