Description After forging some spoons I had an urge to make a fork and a knife companied with a bigger spoon. These went as present for my friend on his 30th birthday. The fork took some time to make but wasn't as nasty as I had suspected. Again, the material is stainless steel so these are completely usable on daily basis.

Now wouldn't life be more interesting if we had to fight what we ate before we ate it?

That's what our ancestors did for generations. Getting the can of pea soup open is enough of a fight for me.

Indeed, so much to do and so little time. That's what life is about.

Voodoo cutlery! Awesome stuff. If I didn't have to worry about paying rent, I'd totally commission something like this.

that's so cool 0.o
how did you make the knife sharp enough to cut things?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rajala In reply to Emo-Marshmallow [2009-01-03 20:09:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
I forged the knife thin and used grinders to make it even thinner. Then I sharpened the edge a bit.

The title just reminds me of the movie "The Mask of Zorro"... the master is training his apprentice, and he says "Choose your weapon." The apprentice lunges across the room and seizes a sword. When he turns back to his master, the master is holding a spoon.

That was just the first thing that came to mind. But those are just so cool - I love the knife! Was it hard to figure out where to put the face?

Rajala In reply to XburiedinblackX [2009-01-02 10:30:18 +0000 UTC]

Haven't seen the movie but by that description it might be amusing.
The name actually comes from the song "Choose Your Weapon" by an obscure late 80's/early 90's industrial band Vanishing Heat. The song is a killer so this is sort of a tribute to it.

I decided quite quickly about the face on the knife. Had it been closer to top it would have had a bigger chin instead of a big cool cone hat.

It's an action movie, but it has its moments. The whole thing isn't as amusing as that, but still... in one of the earliest scenes, there's one of the best exchanges I've ever heard. "I thought you were tied up?!" "That's because you're stupid."

Obscure industrial, eh? If the song is a killer, as you say, I may do some digging and check out Vanishing Heat. I've been listening to a bit of industrial lately, and I tend to be drawn to obscure bands.

(Pssst - I do tributes to songs, as well. So much of my art is inspired by music - and a good amount of poetry as well.)

Haha, that is true - and the big cone hat on the knife is pretty cool. I just realized how odd it is that little of my comments actually have to do with the art they're on. Hmm.

I'll just restate that this set is very awesome, to make it a little more relevant, heheh.

Just realized that Vanishing Heat has been in myspace since last summer:

Choose Your Weapon is the first to play.
Night Stalker and Under the Subway are also fantastic songs.

Yes, I love music more than anything and lately I've been collecting 80's/90's industrial and other alternative electronic music like crazy.

It's actually good to include that kind of "off topic" to comments because that grants more interaction. Else it might just go "Nice work!" "Thank you!".

I've just listened to Choose Your Weapon. It's pretty cool - I like how the vocals don't completely overpower the music, as with most of the stuff I listen to.

I'm fanatical about music - without it, I'm certain I'd go insane. I'm working on a collection of really obscure metal and dark cabaret artists at the moment.

Oh, I know what that's like. I like to converse on my artworks... The short exchanges you just described can be rather irritating. Especially when one is looking for feedback, eh?

chiluzzdia [2009-01-02 04:01:07 +0000 UTC]

how did you make them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rajala In reply to chiluzzdia [2009-01-02 10:37:11 +0000 UTC]

I forged them from 8 mm stainless steel rod and cleaned the surface with some grinders. The fork was made by drilling holes, then opening the peaks with an angle grinder and finally heating the peaks and forging them sharper and folding to place.
