Description Summary(from Goodreads):

    Maya's family has just moved from Idaho to Spores Ferry, Oregon. She's nervous about starting middle school and making new friends, but soon that's the last thing on her mind. First, a fairy flies into her room. Then it turns out that the kids in the apartment building next door do magic, and their basement is full of portals to other worlds. She's bursting with new experiences and delight . . . and secrets, because she can't breathe a word to her family, not even when she winds up taking care of an alien!

Review:

So it wasn't exactly want I expected. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the story, but it seemed...short.

So I know it's a series, but I thought it would have a lot more to do with the book's name. There are Thresholds and the meaning and all that jazz, but the only thing the MC worries about is a random talking egg attached to her hand. That's basically it.

But!...despite that, the first of the series explains how it all started, so I won't complain too much. However, I do wish more could have been explained about the magic system and the schooling the Janus family outside regular school. Other than that, I loved how Maya began to learn things slowly, instead of jumping right into their world with everything explained to her in one go.

Maya was a likable character. Anybody could relate to you, especially the artsy type. However, with the Janus family, I have to wait for the second book to see if I could get a feel for their character. I just couldn't grasp who they really were.

So overall I give Thresholds:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

I loved the book, but I wish it were longer. I don't wish for her to learn everything so quickly, but if the book is a trilogy, it would have been in Nina's best interest to make it longer. But hey. Some, people don't have a lot to explain in their story. So who knows. Either way, I loved the book.
