Description On November 23 my service dog Rhodey was killed protecting my family from a rabid coyote that was trying to enter our property. This is my favorite picture of him....for an interesting reason. It was the moment I knew...he was going to be one of the most exceptional dogs I had ever had the pleasure to work with.

See this photo was taken August 7, 2013, and my best friend (pictured) and I had just come back from having my very first service dog put to sleep. Moxie was 14 and was the center of many of our college adventures. After we put Moxie down we came home and raised a glass to her. We laughed, and yes cried, and Rhodey stayed like this....his front paws on her lap, and his back on the ground, for well over an hour, simply comforting her.

It's always his eyes where I see it, that deep and souful understanding of, "These are my people, I take care of them." Losing Rhodey was an intense blow, emotionally, and to my independence and safety. His hearing alerts alone were 98% accurate and kept me safe at home and in public. His medical alerts and responses allowed me to go out on my own, without caretakers and to lead a fairly normal life.

Rhodey was a lab/greyhound mix, and was only 4 years old when he passed. (He's all lab in this picture, but trust me he has an exceptionally houndy butt)

I'm sorry for your loss. I hope that things are going well with you and your current SD, even without Rhodey there to help teach your new companion. This is a great picture of him.
