An original species from a world I'm creating.

Neeps are a tiny species of dragon that only gets between 1 1/2 to 2 inches long. Though their wings resemble butterfly wings, they're actually closer to the 'rib wings' of flying lizards.

They live in colonies, and they eat insects, berries, and nectar. In autumn, packs of them will hunt small animals like rodents to stock up for winter.

During the winter, they hide in hollows of tree trunks or any sheltered area, venturing out only for water.

In spring, the colonies emerge from hiding, and the males immediately start competing for females. The females look for the males with the brightest colors and the most intricate flight displays. After mating, mated pairs will work together to build a nest out of spiderwebs and lichen, where the female will lay 2-5 eggs. Both parents help raise the hatchlings until they're large enough to leave the nest and enter a sort of creche, when the whole colony takes over the care of all the young fledglings, until they're able to hunt for themselves.

They're not much interested in people at all, unless people offer them tidbits of food. But then you get a whole flock of little squeaky pests wanting to see if you have food for all of them. If you don't, they'll wander off to find some on their own. And if you have long hair and sit still long enough near a colony, you'll find hundreds of tiny braids in your hair.
