whew! omg finally done! I have been working for quite some time on this picture... actually i sat exactly 44 hours on it (yeah... i wrote it down to know it exactly). there is something i do not like about it, but i can't tell without help. i think there is a problem with the focus of the picture. if you have an idea, write a comment, i would highly appreciate it.This illustration shows a young Alchemist, once pure and kind. He fell for dark magic when his young love died in an accident. Unwilling to let go of her, he traps her soul to keep her close to him, which lets her suffer unending pain. in the end, she gets free and rips his soul appart as penalty.
Don't use black magic, kids!

I really love this photo. I think it has a just the right touch of mysticisim and the lighting is pretty well done. My only gripe is the horizon. It seems so clean that it pulls me out of the picture. A small gauss. blur would haze it just a bit and add that touch of something extra. Otherwise good picture! Keep it up!

I have done this illustration a long time ago when I did not yet think about stuff like that. I will make sure to not repeat that mistake in the future.

The comment about counterweight has a feeling of truth for me. My first instinct was to look at diagonal tension...
You've got the falling diagonal (upper left to lower right) down effectively, but there's a broken rising diagonal (lower left to upper right) that screams for some weight or highlight.
I wonder if a layered gradient filter to deepen the shadows in the upper right would make a difference.
The only other suggestion I can make ehre is the insight that the lighting on the coat-tail on the alchemists left-side confuses me. I don't know where the source of the light is. It seems too bright to be ambient light from the sky and it's on thetop-side of the coat, so it's not from the circle. Possibly the moon is obscured by the lovers' form? It's not her, 'cause she's not glowing...
I think this is beautiful, and I'm only making these suggestions because of your associated text...

slowly i can see the disballance myself, after people pointing it out. i think the best solution might be to crop the image to take away the empty parts of the right side. that way the diagonal would go over the whole illustration and not just parts of it.
the light you are talking about is really just a... lets say... light to make it pretty XD it comes from behind-leftish. there is no real source for it besides maybe the moon or lightning. it is really just there to make the alchemist stand out more. i am evil like that ^^ sometimes i try to make something realistic, and sometimes i do not care! muhaha.

thought of FMA too when i was about 25 hours into the illustration XD then i figured it is too much time spent to start again. in the very beginning he was supposed to be a mage. but glowing hands were even more boring.
it is all about practicing! but i am happy that people provide pictures for references. without them it is hard to draw somewhat realistic – how should you draw something when you do not know how it actually looks?
so get references, try alot and you would be just as good

This is probably like... artistic doom-bringing advice, since I know next to nothing about design, but it seems like the areas you want people to focus on the most are the least saturated and bright in the entire picture. For instance, the circle around the alchemist's feet and the candle flames are the most intensely coloured.

yeah the problem is, sometimes you can do that, sometimes you cant. it all depends on what you want your illustration to look like. I like full and strong colored pictures, so reducing the saturation would create a new problem for me v.v it is too bad, isnt it? ><

Wow, echt atemberaubend! Die Koloration is echt gelungen! ^^
Hm... Wegen dem Fokus, es wirkt ein klein wenig überfüllt - ev hätte ich den Alchimisten etwas kleiner gemacht und ein klein wenig mehr an den unteren Rand des Bildes gerückt, so dass die Perspektive ein wenig dynamischer wird...
Trotzdem wirklich wunderschönes Bild
