Friendly reminder that Marching Band is an extremely athletic activity! Nearing the end of band camp this year, and a many a kids across the country can tell you, it is NOT easy. Sure the lot of you are probably like, "Oh, I can play an instrument and walk around on a field piece of pie." NO. YOU CAN'T. Try staying on the correct foot, marking time, backwards marching, crab walking, ladderal slides, memorizing a show, memorizing stand tunes, memorizing cadences, marching on blacktop in 80+ weather, wearing rather thick uniforms, getting to your dot, staying in line, keeping the line straight, 8 to 5, marching in 30- weather, doing parades, getting horrid tan lines, etc. etc. ETC.And high school marching ain't even all that. Check out some DCI peeps for some intense business.
Marching band is for real guys. :I

I gave up on trying to tell people marching band is a vigorous sport that requires tough physical activity that doesn't even begin to top what it takes mentally. I'm just going to stick it on its own tier called Performing Arts and not even try it to compare it to football and wrestling or whatever... because they're not the same at all. Football is about winning the other team and playing the game. Marching band is competitive in that you have to do what you do so well you impress the judges to say you win
Band geeks just do a different thing from the jocks and, in my opinion from having played sports before, it's a heck of a lot more difficult and physically demanding

Easy? Ha! This year, we've had a few people drop out because they couldn't handle it. Unfortunately, we also sent a couple people to the hospital...
Plus, we had some cheerleaders tell us and say they think marching band is a lot harder than cheer, and cheer can get pretty hard.
My school's band is lucky to have a football team and cheer squad that respect us, while the coaches do not :/

Amen to this. Yesterday, at our football game, two of our busses had an accident, which caused us to miss halftime. Then the game was postponed for an HOUR AND A HALF, then it poured rain- so hard it got through my uniform. And after all that, we didn't even get to march our show, which we'd been working on for two and a half hours to perfect earlier in the day. And we still get complaints from some of the kids who go to our school.

Yep. That's pretty much what I say to all the knuckle-heads who are stupid enough to say "Marching Band is not a sport." to my face. Then I threaten to murder them with my saxophone and sabre. They don't bring it up again.
