It didn't backpedal! It's trying something new (with the not sketching first, just drawing), which is progress.

Their expressions are both cute. I like both their positions, especially how they're both doing something with their hands and their legs/feet are facing different directions. I especially like that both the middle legs are forward, while their outer legs are more backward, since that forms a nice sort of triangular composition. I thought you would just post it in black and white, so the colors are a nice touch.
