The south-easternmost administrative district or département of continental France, stretching from the French Riviera to the foothills of the Alps, is called les Alpes-Maritimes ("the Alps of the Sea"), and nowhere is this dual parentage more observable than during a walk on the small hillock of the Plateau de la Justice. The first, southern part of the path overlooks the perched city of Eze, near Nice, and, beyond it, offers a fine view of the Mediterranean Sea, while its northern part is a promontory facing the first snowy summits of the Alps, among them Mount Gélas, the highest peak of the district, culminating at 3 143 metres above sea level.

The Plateau de la Justice is thus named because it was once the place where the gibbet of the feudal lords of Eze was erected but, nowadays, you will only find harmless umbrella pines there : when the winter sun sets, their bark takes on a glowing colour, highlighting the luminous white of the mountain range for a short time.
