Between Planplatten and Käserstatt, in Hasliberg (Switzerland), August 2018

The way down meandered through low mountain pastures -- a landscape of isolated farms, green hillocks and distant scree slopes, mostly populated with cows (as well as a hefty horse and a grey donkey, companionably grazing near a stream during a break from their hard labours). Leaving behind these scenes of rural domesticity, the path reached a rocky cliff dotted with the dramatic silhouettes of pines : beyond it, in the afternoon haze, the perennial snows beckoned, unreal and shimmering like an Alpine Shangri-La.
