Description

🌱 from the ground up! 🌱

Name: Quentin Gardinier
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Species: Human
Job/Skill: Merchant - Harvest: Whether due to luck or his green thumb, when in possession of an object, Quentin can multiply its quantity over time if he showers it with enough love and attention.
Height: 5’11” || 180 cm

Personality:

Optimistic | Cheerful | Hard-Working | Righteous | Naive | Simple-Minded | Pushover

With a head full of dreams, Quentin has spent his life working towards his goals with a bright smile. Full of patient determination, Quentin climbs one step at a time, putting his 100% into every passing day, and yet never daring to plan too far ahead, lest he become overwhelmed. However, despite his best efforts, Quentin can’t seem to actually...get anywhere. Whether it’s because he can’t tell a lie from the truth on the best of days, or a potential friend from foe, Quentin falls for the simplest of schemes again and again. While he doesn’t let these setbacks get him down for long, Quentin’s biggest roadblock is his own tendency to get distracted, or to focus on the wrong thing, turning a straight line into a convoluted path. While he does his best not to bother those around him and strives do the Right Thing, in consideration of others and their ideas Quentin often ends up compromising on his dreams again and again, until he’s working towards something he hardly even wants. But he’s still working! So maybe it’ll turn out alright? That’s what he’s telling himself at least!

History:

TLDR:

  • Raised in a low class family of farmers with 6 siblings as the forgettable middle child.

  • Really wanted to be a dragon growing up!! But well, that’s not possible, so he decided to become a tamer instead.

  • Saved up money to go to dragon taming school, but got scammed into buying a bunch of avocados thinking they were dragon eggs.

  • Became a gardener at the taming school, planted his avocados, and was eventually able to start selling them and making a little money

  • Moved to Glise since the profits were better and has been farming and selling ever since!

Born to a farming family living in a small kingdom on the edges of the Cancri Empire, Quentin was raised never knowing a moment of true peace - after all, with three older siblings, and three younger siblings, it was rare that something wasn’t happening around the house. Quiet and well-behaved (compared to his other siblings at least), Quentin grew up in the spaces left behind. He could never be as strong as Samson, or as smart as Fabrice, or as pretty as Esther, or as charming as Clara - so he simply existed to fill whatever gaps needed to be filled for their family to keep running like a well-oiled machine - picking up the slack on the fields whenever an inevitable break down happened.

Of course, Quentin’s one true desire was a secret - one he only let himself think about when walking alone through rows of green. Quentin wanted to be a dragon.

Not like the lumbering ones which helped in the fields sometimes, but a cool wild dragon - soaring above the clouds, guided by the wind as if gravity wasn’t real after all. And well, dragons turned into people sometimes, right? So why couldn’t a human become a dragon?

Or that’s what he thought until he confessed to his school teacher one day (hoping she would have access to some Secret Dragon Lore) and was immediately laughed at.

Well. If he couldn’t be a dragon, than being a tamer was the next best thing, right? You could be friends with the dragons, and maybe even ride and talk to them? Quentin gently adjusted his future plans, just as determined as ever. And so the years went by, with Quentin slowly saving his pocket change for an opportunity. Within his kingdom, tamers tended to go through their training at a couple major academies. Of course, it wasn’t common that a low class farmer could afford such an education, but Quentin was determined to save up enough to at least get through the doors - after that, well, he would worry about it later!

Time passed, and with both a determined expression and every cent he’d hoarded since he was a child, Quentin finally felt confident enough to journey away from home at age 16. His parents threw up rudimentary protests, but in the end, it wasn’t like Quentin had a specific role he was leaving behind. And so he left - traveling along a well worn path towards what he hoped was the fulfilment of a dream.

It only took two weeks for everything to go wrong. Bombarded with new sights and starry-eyed, Quentin was easy prey for the nearest snake-oil salesman. It only took a couple compliments, a charming smile, and a couple subtle digs at his self-esteem, before Quentin was eagerly handing over the large majority of his tiny fortune in exchange for what his new friend claimed were ‘Dragon Eggs’. A rare and once in a lifetime chance to have his own dragon! Maybe he wouldn’t even need to go to taming school if he could just do this right?

Of course, what Quentin actually received was, in fact, a basket of avocados.

Out of money, and feeling the burn of shame at his own stupidity, Quentin finished his journey towards the academy anyway - still determined to make the best out of the situation he had found himself in. With no coin and no status, Quentin obviously wasn’t allowed a place among the years students, but he managed to bargain his way into the school anyway - as a gardener.

Well, at least it was something he knew how to do? Quentin tried not to think too hard about it, as he fell into the same routine he had known all his life. Tending to the plants was more peaceful than it was at home, and after a talk with the quartermaster, he was allowed to plant the avocado pits (since it would be a waste to just throw them away, right?)

Years passed. Students came to the academy and graduated, and still, Quentin continued to garden. But that was alright! The avocado trees grew quicker than expected, and even bore fruit, and after giving a share to the chefs, Quentin was allowed to sell the extra for his own savings. He began a routine of going to the markets every couple of days, and trying his hand at bartering for whatever he could get - while getting ripped off a good percentage of the time, he did well enough to survive.

Again, he was saving. Waiting. Time seemed to be both fleeting and eternal.
Quentin kept working hard, taking care of his trees and the rest of the academy grounds. He heard through word of mouth that selling in the Straight was more profitable than in the Empire, and since he wasn’t too far from the border, he decided to make the journey to the closest trade town accessible to him - Glise - and was happy to see his profits increase drastically. Glise became one of his most frequently visited destinations, and eventually, Quentin saved enough to buy a plot of land on the outskirts of the city itself (painfully and delicately transporting his trees to their new home).

As he gathered his first bountiful harvest that he could fully claim ownership to, Quentin felt a sense of pride - and a feeling of emptiness. What was he doing again? What happened to dragon taming? He was 23 now and no closer to his dreams than he was seven years ago. What was the point of everything he had done? What was the point of his entire exist--
Quentin turned his thoughts back to soil conditions, irrigation, crop rotation, and so on. There were so many things he had to focus on - he could worry about all those other things later! For now, there was farming to be done, and avocados to sell.
