Hey!It's been a while since I last had a chance to post, but I wanted to put something up for you guys today, so here it is.
After I watched the movie Apocalypto I was so impressed that i wanted to draw something from it. I ended up going for an easy character shot of the main bad dude: Zero Wolf. With this drawing I was also testing myself out to see if i could draw a character in a straight on front shot and make it interesting. For some reason I do find it challenging to draw people in what would seem to be the easiest pose of all! heh.
Anyway....Apocalypto has been and gone already, but I'm looking forward to the DVD, as I really enjoyed this flick. I know Mel Gibson isn't the most popular man, but if you can seperate the art from the artist, I think he made a really fun balls-out action movie. And to top it off it is set in the Mayan civilization which I am really interested in. What did you guys think of it?

Nice drawing. I've seen Apocalypto. It was alright (since I love history, including that of Mesoamerica), but I'd have to say its the bloodiest and most disturbing movie I've seen.

Apocalypto was a cool movie. It was okay as an action flick, but most interesting for depicting Aztec way of life. I don't think it was the mayans. Enough bitching from me.
I like your style. Zero Wolf looks ready to jump into Street Fighter Alpha.

the drawing is fantastic, you did capture the brutality of Zero wolf.
But since you ask about the movie, the only part that deserves recognition from Apocalytpo is the costume design, the rest Im sorry to say it but its crap. Mel claimed he did a lot of research and was being very careful on portrafying Mayans, wich of course he didnt.
I mean, he showed a weird twisted vision of the Maya world, added stuff from other areas of Mexico to suport his vision and repainted the Murals of Bonampak to show beheading for example. The time its set its one of the things that shows he did no research whatsoever. A city that looked like Tikal, with aztec mural paitings, a badly done Aztec skull wall, rothing corpses rolling down the stairs, Mayans being surprised at a solar eclipse wtf. Mayan raiding villages to capture priioners, and a big etc.
not to mention his obvious plagarism of "return to Aztan"
But...Mel do knows how to make a movie thats going to have you in the edge of the seat, interested in whats going to happend next. there was so much he could have done with a mayan theme, but no, he went for the easy path of portraying natives as savages...and of course, as a final blow...the spaniards arrive while the natives look in awe, yes, they finaly came to pu order to this land of chaos...
as said, the only good part of apocalypto (the name isnt even mayan) were the costumes, those in deed rocked.
sorry if it ended up like a rant, its just that mesoamerican cultures are my passion, seeing a movie that extends stereotypes about them even more, kinda enfuriates me.

Love it. The linework is top notch, and I love the graphic halftone background. I really like Mel Gibson as a director, insane though he may be. His movies are always beautifully shot, the costumes always look amazing, and there's always tons of blood and gore. There's something for everyone!

i loved this film, although subtitles dont bother me anyway, i completely forgot they werent speaking english lol you know its a good movie when that happens XD awsome work man, and that film is one of the best ive seen and youve really made this guy look awsome! it would make an awsome comic book XD

WOW man... your drawing is great!!! really good character... love it!!!!
but, although Mel Gibson is an Excellent movie producer, he got it all wrong when he try to explain the Maya culture... for example:
it's a fact that when the Spanish troops and missionarys stepped on Mexican land, Mayas where already disappeared... you can search for this information... that movie has a lot of mistakes. He combined cultures to draw the characters wardrobe... ahhhh, I can go on and on whit the several mistakes!!!
my point is, that if you are interested in maya's culture, try to search for good information and don't base your excellent work in that @#*!\ΒΊ& movie... and don't missunderstand me, I love Gibson's work... but he got it all wrong this time

thanks dude. I'm sure if you read my comments you will see that I didn't take the movie as historically acurate in any way. It is really a fantasy movie based on a real period of time. Just as a movie like "The Mummy", it is set in a real time period, but obviously not historically acurate.

cool man. The pose isn't bad at all. It still looks good, adn your colors definitely help. And if I can says something that has nothing to do with the piece, I'm glad you liked the movie. I have a lot of Maya blood in me, and it's cool that people get to learn more of the culture...even if it is by Ol' Mel...[which by the by I'm glad he didn't throw in the whole "Mayas were evil and that's why the Christians came and destroyed them" nonsense]...keep it up, man.

they are all as good as each other. I don't follow any of them religeously, but if I had to choose I would most likely go with Adam Warren. His pencils are awesome.

Looks awesome man - and yes straight on views are a nightmare! Have you ever done full character rotations - that'll kill ya too! You're style looks amazing on this concept - would make a very interesting comicbook for sure. I have yet to see the film (missed it on it's initial run in the theaters) but will rent it on DVD.
Too bad Mel tarnished his reputation with that stupid outburst - as he does make very good films...

I hear ya on those character rotations. They can be a pain in the ass. I used to have to draw a little front and side stuff when I worked in 3D.
Hows things? I'm real sorry to hear about your recent loss too. I have been away from DA for a little while, but I did read your journal entry. I hope you and your family are doing well. I've dealt with a lot of that kind of stuff myself in recent years, so I can definately sympathise.

ZERO WOLF looks awesome man - the texture on his loin cloth is very nice, surprisingly realistic looking.
The head dress and body tattoos have nice detail too.
