Description Hey Hey!

Hope everyone is doing good on this fine "winter" day. That is of course if you happen to be on the southernsphere of our lovely planet!

*ahem*

OK.....So, this piece was done for a game some of you may be familiar with. Remember California Games? Its an old skool calssic. Well, apparently there is a new version comming out, and I was asked to do this piece of art for it. The details are pretty vague, but I thought you guys might still like to check something out which is more on the commercial side of things.

My lines with colours by the ever mighty SEED

For the most part it came out as we wanted it to, and I was pretty happy with the result. If I'm gonna nit pick myself in public (as I do sometimes) I'm gonna say that the skateboard could have probably been pulled off a little cooler, but anyways....... We ended up doing the background on a seperate layer as the client asked for it as an additional thing after we were done with the piece. The idea was to capture that summer feel, and I think Seed really nailed it with his colour choices. Especially that clear blue sky and the sun shine. Nice work there Germany!

Hope you likes!

Jon.

Very good, classic game - I still play it on the C64 I always like nostalgic tributes and your's is just great But as a fan of the classics, I must admit that the same picture done in 80s style would be just phenomenal

(I think as an artist with your skills, you can handle my eccentric, nostalgic criticism. )

heh....thanks. Nostalgic critisism taken on board

Although this was done for the modern version of the game (intended as the cover I believe) I agree that a classic 80's version would be cool.

Red-J In reply to Murder-Mystery [2006-01-02 12:01:57 +0000 UTC]

ah..........that was just a little grafitti kinda swish thing. The original version had no background, so he was resting on the swish, but then I was asked by the client to add the background.

Awesome work. California Games was a most excellent game. They had the one of the Archaic NES, but there was also another one on the Super NES as well. The games on each of the systems there were some games that were allright and some that were pretty bad. I liked the BMX on the oldschool NES and the halfpipe skateboarding on the SNES California Games.

Red-J In reply to paulrik [2005-07-13 14:25:58 +0000 UTC]

thanks. Good info there on the game too. Your post jogs my memory a little as well. I vaguely remember the halfpipe on snes now....Snes was definately the most kick ass console times...for me anyway.

cheers!

SNES was the best. And a tough system too. Mine got squished under a bed-leg that busted a hole right through the plastic casing. The power button sticks a bit because of where it's cracked, but it still works. My friends have X-Box and PS2's and they're already starting to break down, but the SNES had longevity!

VIVA LE SNES!!

You rock red! I remember this game, wasn't it one of the 1st ever computer games? Anyhow, I really like your style, your characters are just so dynamic and full of life. Hats off to Seed for the color job as well

Red-J In reply to Steel-Eyes [2005-07-13 14:22:10 +0000 UTC]

Hey Steel, thanks very much for your kind comments. Not sure if it was one of the first as I'm sure pong, pacman and space invaders were all well before cali games, but given the growing history of games it was made in the beggining

thanks for looking!

J, incredible feel in this pic! you captured the mood of the original game PERFECTLY, and i PRAY that they dont butcher the new version. if this doesnt scream "case/box art" for the game, i dunno what the hell would! the feel is great and seed's colours are - of course - undeniabley awesome. the skateboard maybe coulda been a tad better as you said, but its almost in keeping with the feel of the game to not take it over-serious. it seems like he is just kind of there rather than making actual contact with the ground or whatever, but im guessing thats cuz the BG was added on a second layer? even if not, it could just be a stylistic choice. but the skateboard itself, the Scarface Chibi graphic is just a great little touch! super detail! my only genuine concern about the pic is the right hand of the skateboarder, its twisted much too far. as someone who skated for about 9 years i can say ive twisted and contorted my body many different ways, but if your arm were ever twisted THAT much, youd be in trouble. instead of pointing out toward the viewer, that hand should be pointing AWAY from us, with the thumb pointed inward, rather than out. this would also keep with the theme of him using his hand to plant for some kind of trick or something.

anyway, very cool gig, hella tight pic, WORD!
keep the hotness coming bro, peace!

K

Hey Kryss!

Thanks for the in depth comment! I enjoy reading this kinda breakdown.

Your right and I agree with pretty much everything you said. Actually when I was reading your thoughts I imagined the pic and how I drew that skaters hand, and once I scrolled up I realised that it looked completely twisted in a crazy way! heh. These are the things that slip by sometimes. Not that its a good excuse at all, but I had no time on this one to review the piece. It was flat out from start to finish. Good spotting on that hand though.

Thanks a bunch man!

Red-J In reply to Grasnor [2005-07-13 14:19:35 +0000 UTC]

yeah! Actually, I got the very same thing on my DC. I enjoyed playing the old mega mans again.

Sorry but I have to disagree.....nintendo were the kings

(Pretty crazy when you think that sega now makes games for nintendo eh?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Grasnor In reply to Red-J [2005-07-27 02:38:35 +0000 UTC]

hahaha That's true.

But in my opinion SEGA was always at the front of all systems ( I said WAS). But Nintendo had and still has a powerfull card, GAMEBOY. Then Super NES was a BOOM! for them. Actually, I'm collecting SNES roms for my computer. Now I have almost 120 games.
