Description Hey guys,

As I said, I would show you a Black n White zip-a-tone version of the Raphael drawing I posted the other day.

Since Ninja turtles is a black n white comic book, I figured it would be nice to play with some black n white effects to see what could be done with my lines. It's the first time I have tried anything like this, and I'm not sure I got it right. Perhaps I was a little heavy handed in some areas. I dunno. It was fun though, and I think this really gives the art a nice textured sort of old skool look.

The drawing was penciled by me, with inks by Sean Parsons.
Zip effects done by me using PS. (not traditional ZIP)

You can check out the coloured version of this pic here: [link] My feeling is that most people will prefer the coloured version, but if you dig the B/W stuff let me know!

cheers!

J.

PS: For best viewing please look at the Full-view. You can apreciate the texture created by the zips best at that size. (I think)

Raph has always been my favorite. This is a fantastic and unique rendition!

(I found this image, BTW, by doing a Google image search of "Zip-a-tone". Raph is on the first page!

This is really cool. I was hoping you had found some trick or secret to ziptone in Photoshop. Sounds like you're doing it the same way I was trying. I actually scanned in my one coveted sheet of Zip-A-Tone and just re-sized it as needed. Great job, by the way!

Red-J In reply to Reklaw280 [2006-11-17 01:55:00 +0000 UTC]

wow!!! you own a sheet of zip-a-tone!! Thats not a bad way of doing it actually. i hadn't tought of that. But yeah...theres no easy way of doing anything really. I like when you tell people you colour stuff on the computer, and they kinda go "oh...it's computer" like as if that means the computer does everything for you! haha

thanks!

thats very awesome toning. how didja do it? did you do greyscale and turn it into tones?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Red-J In reply to Haven12 [2006-10-23 00:15:28 +0000 UTC]

hey. thaks. What I do is create the zip patterns as seperate files and then cut them to the right shapes to create the shading. Kinda like using real zip, except digitally.

I really dig it man. People can be very cautious with tone, get an overall grey washiness, but this is fantastic and contrasty.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Red-J In reply to DannyMcGillick [2006-11-01 23:00:38 +0000 UTC]

cheers dude. I was a zip o virgin until I did this one. I knew contrast would be the key with it though. Glad you like.

hey! I like this more than colors, maybe because it's not that often to use tones now daws in american comics, it gives a manga look to it

Oposed to the mass, I like the background
Thing that quite bothers me is the background feet, I think it could be a tad less shaded, but then again this is only nitpicking

you captured the feel of old school.but i do think the bg is not necassary.it detracts.i'm no master though.i just drift through and drop opinions.are these textures you ad to load or did you make them?
