Blackpaw is a cold-hearted tom cat. He doesn't care for other cats and prefers manipulating them rather than befriending them. He could often be found tormenting his deaf brother, Owlpaw, or arguing with Alderpaw.

Not long after Stormpaw, Echopaw, Kestrelpaw and Bouncepaw are apprenticed Stormpaw ,who is apprenticed to Tanglestar, and Blackpaw ,who is apprenticed to Tinystorm, go on patrol. Blackpaw and Stormpaw find a coyote den and the four cats chase the coyote away. When they get back to camp Stormpaw is praised for finding the den. Blackpaw is annoyed and follows Stormpaw out of camp later. Overcome with rage Blackpaw attacks Stormpaw, first scratching his eyes so he can't see then leaving him for dead. Later, Stormpaw is brought back to camp alive but he doesn't know who attacked him. Later, Alderfur is bragging about being a warrior and Blackpaw gets into an argument with him. He goes out for a walk, annoyed at his clan mates. As he is on the Hiddenclan border he sees a young apprentice chase a rabbit over. Seeing that the apprentice is alone he attacks, even though he didn't intend to kill the apprentice his rage takes over. Once the cat is dead he throws her into the thorn-filled ditch and washed his paws in a nearby stream. Creekpaw's death is mentioned at the next gathering. Soon Blackpaw is made a warrior and given the name Blackstag. A few moons go by and Alderfur and Blackstag keep arguing. Later, Blackstag pretended he wanted to be friends with Alderfur. He lured him out to the forest and attacked him. However, Alderfur managed to get back to camp and told everyone what happened. Blackstag then confessed to trying to kill Stormpaw and killing Creekpaw. Blackstag was confessed and as he was running away he climbed a dead tree and one of the branches broke beneath him and he fell to his death.
