First I do an outline sketch, then I "fill" the outline (keepeing clear of the marked out white spots) with a hard pencil, say 2H or 3H until the motif is a smooth clean grey "blob" on the paper. This smooths the paper down which makes the softer pencils that follow less "grainy". Then I do the shading with a HB-3B pencil, and finally the dark black spots are pressed on with a 7B or even softer pencil.
